Who Are You? What are your career-related hopes, fears, strengths, and weaknesses? (Exercise) Print a hope and a fear on one side of an index card. Then, print a strength and a weakness on the other side. (Do not put your name on the card.) Class discussion. (Online students may discuss answers with online classmates and instructor, if desired.) Managing Expectations Realistic expectations are modified multiple times as you progress through the process of learning new career-readiness information and practicing new career-readiness skills. With each layer of new academic information and career skills development, practice and assessment of practice, provides new information about additional information and skills that are needed. This process of learning, practice, & assessment; then, learning, practice, & assessment; continues throughout your career. Mapping out the steps from intern to CEO will be revised multiple times over the course of your career. Students attending the same school, pursuing the same degree and major, earning the same grade point average can have vastly different career outcomes, due to individual differences and preparation. Dream Job/Goals/Opportunities Questions for out-of-class exploration: What is your dream job/career? How are you preparing for that job/career? What are your short and long term goals? Doors of Opportunity Slide 6: Five minutes: Doors of opportunity open at critical times during your college career. Only those who have prepared will be ready to walk through those doors, when they open. Some of those doors will close before you graduate, never to open again. Each door leads to another door.
