Inject #1 @ 0845 25% of your current patient census are reporting fever, body aches, and cough. They are requesting evaluation by the nursing staff. Following triage/evaluation by staff, the individuals are promptly given a mask and escorted back to their room (if LTC/SNF) or isolated from others (in other settings). What plans do you have in place for this type of event Who needs to be notified at this time Internal External

Inject #2 @ 0855 Staff notifications of possible infectious disease risk Who needs to be alerted/notified Key personnel Leadership nHICS HICS ICS Think about the impact on the system of such an event

Facility notifies Public Health to ascertain risk regarding patient, staff, visitor, and public risk. Implement appropriate infection control measures Droplet Locate and prepare ppe What else can LPH do for you Inject #3 @ 0910

Inject #4 @ 0915 Preliminary patient assessment begins. [Example: physical exam, vital signs, clinical and diagnostic interventions] Have a medical professional give some examples of an assessment as a result of influenza Vs, signs & symptoms, etc. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm

Inject #5 @ 0920 One or two of your patients are needing transport via the local EMS agency, they are requesting more information on the type of patient and what precautions they need. Facility informs the EMS agency of the required PPE to care for this/these patient(s) Consider notification to local hospital of event as well

Inject #6 @ 0930 Just-in-Time Training to Facility personnel. Due to the number of patients that this is affecting, the facility will assess the ability of staffing to provide continued care. Facility conducts appropriate just-in-time training (JIT) as needed for necessary PPE How many staff are familiar with ppe usage Do staff understand the differences between the precaution levels Droplet Airborne contact

Inject #7 @ 0945 Your facility is experiencing an IS/IT failure effecting the EMR and all internal communications What are the facility plans/procedures for such an event Facility will need to determine with whom they need to contact  A server reboot is required and will take 10 minutes

Staff has identified that there is a shortage of PPE needed to care for all the patients. Facility identifies the need to reach out to the coalition for assistance in obtaining PPE assistance. Inject #8 @ 1000

Inject #9 @ 1010 Public Health has requested the facility assist with obtaining information from the patient regarding visitors and exposure. What information can be given to Public Health about these patients Who can support/advise the facility in its’ enquiries regarding HIPPA?

Inject #10 @ 1015 Family members of patient have arrived in the waiting area and are concerned about their family member. Some of the family members are showing signs & symptoms of ILI Facility identifies the appropriate way to isolate the family members Who communicates with the family members? Are they considered possible patients? What PPE would be needed to communicate with the family?

Inject #11 @ 1030 Someone has posted on Facebook that something weird is going on at the facility – they saw people walking around in “moon suits”. Post questions if ‘aliens’ have landed??? Discuss who would take the lead in communications about this and what is the role of the facility PIO in a response. Have the facility PIO draft a message for the facilities Facebook page to explain how the hospital “participates with the Central Minnesota health preparedness coalition in planning for/responding to events within the region.”

Inject #12 @ 1045 Environmental services need to clean the patient exam room. The patient (s) has/have been successfully transferred to the EMS transport. The exam room must be cleaned. Identify special measures that would be needed (if any) for cleaning this room. What PPE does environmental services/housekeeping need to wear while cleaning this room?

Inject #13 @ 1100 Employees that cared for the patient have a lot of questions and concerns. Identify what resources are available for the employees. Discuss how you would work with impacted employees to alleviate their concerns regarding their physical health as well as deal with their mental health.
