Making Inferences in History DO NOW Tuesday, august 27, 2019 Objective: analyze how the rulers of China rebuilt their empires after years of war Agenda: China Rebuilds its Empire Notes (pg. 178-180) Making Inferences in History Why would a lack of central government cause an empire to collapse? Give an advantage and disadvantage of having a warlord as a leader of a kingdom. 3. Why would it be beneficial to have control over the Silk Road? 4. Explain how the Tang dynasty was weakened.

The Sui Dynasty Brings Unity then Revolt Wendi was followed by his son, Yangdi, who wanted to expand China’s territory. He was not successful. He had more success trying to bring back the glory of the Han Dynasty. He accomplished the following things: * Repaired the Great Wall * Rebuilt the magnificent Han capital city of Changan * Built the Grand Canal – waterways that connected China’s two great rivers (the Huang He and the Yangtze) * The waterways made it easier to ship rice and other products between northern and southern China. * This united China’s economy.

The Sui Dynasty Brings Unity then Revolt -Yangdi forced the farmers to do all of this work and charged them higher taxes to pay for it. -The farmers revolted and Yangdi was killed, bringing an end to the Sui Dynasty.

DO NOW 8/27/2019 ANSWER THE FOLLOWING Using Complete Sentences : List at least 2 Accomplishments of the SUI Dynasty. List at least 1 way the Tang Dynasty tried to restore order.

The Tang Dynasty 7.20 I can describe the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty and reasons for the cultural diffusion of Buddhism. A.D. 618- a general named himself Emperor and founded the Tang Dynasty which lasted nearly 300 years. Rulers restored strong central government, made reforms to improve government Taizong, most powerful ruler, brought back civil service exams and gave land to farmers Brought peace and order to the countryside

Growth and Trade Tang rulers took control of the Silk Road. Increased trade, cities became wealthy. Changan, world’s largest city, wide avenues and large market squares 700s – Tang rulers faced challenges from Turkish nomads and lost control of Silk Road. Trade and the economy suffered Chinese farmers revolt Continued unrest led to the fall of Tang Rule in A.D. 907.

List 4 out of 6 reunification efforts made by China under the Tang Dynasty. Next, describe how these efforts reunited China and brought a new sense of national identity

The Song Dynasty After the Tang fell, military leaders ruled China. In A.D. 960, one of them became emperor and founded the Song (SUNG) Dynasty. Lasted from A.D. 960 to A.D. 1279. A time of economic prosperity and many cultural achievements Faced many challenges: northern nomads forced them to move their capital south to Hangzhou.

Buddhism in China Buddhism came from India in the A.D. 100s. At the fall of the Han Dynasty, many people in China turned to Buddhism seeking peace and comfort. Tang rulers feared Buddhism’s growing influence. They saw it as an enemy of China’s Confucian traditions. A.D. 845, the Tang government destroyed many Buddhist monasteries and temples. Buddhism in China never fully recovered. Buddhism did, however, thrive in Korea. It later spread to the nearby islands of Japan.

Confucian Ideas/Review Confucius believed that a good government depended on having wise leaders. The Civil Service exams were based on Confucian principles. After the fall of the Han, Confucianism went into decline and Buddhism won many followers with its message of escape from suffering. Tang and Song rulers wanted to return Confucianism to the position of respect it had held before. Neo-Confucianism – a new understanding of Confucianism – created to stop the growing influence of Buddhism. Taught that people should be concerned with the world and also the afterlife. People must be active in society and help others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O--AFCI4HCU

Neo-Confucianism Included some Buddhist and Daoist beliefs. It became more than a set of rules for good behavior. It became a religious tradition with beliefs about spiritual world. Taught that people would find peace of mind if they followed the teachings of Confucius. Neo-Confucianism and civil service exams – strengthen the government. Only men were tested on Confucian beliefs. Only 1 in 5 passed. Scholar-officials – new class of leaders – no physical work – who influenced Chinese thought/government well into modern times.

EXIT - choose one How did Tang rulers use Civil Service examinations to improve the government of China? (3 – 5 sentences) Why do you think Buddhism spread from India through China and into Korea and Japan? (3-5 sentences)
