Unit 4 Lesson 1 What Are Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
Chemistry is the study of matter and how it changes Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space Mass – resistance to change in motion Two types.
Physical Properties are used to identify objects. Can be measured or observed.
1.2 Investigating Matter Matter – anything that has mass and volume Mass – amount of matter in a substance Volume – amount of space in a substance Chemical.

Properties of Matter: =describe matter by its physical appearance: These properties are able to be OBSERVED Color, Shape, Size, Odor State of Matter Physical Properties that don’t change, no matter how much matter is present: Freezing Point, Boiling Point, Melting Point Density Solubility Physical Properties that can change, depending on how much matter is present: Mass, Weight, and Volume

X Doesn’t change with amount of matter + Does change with amount of matter + Does change with amount of matter + Does change with amount of matter

Molecular Motion during Phase changes

Physical Properties States of Matter 1. Solid: has definite shape and volume. particles are closest together in this state. Particles move very little Click circle Particles in matter in a solid state >

Physical Properties of Matter Click water 2. Liquid: Has definite volume. Has no definite shape. Takes shape of its container. Is able to change shape by flowing Particles in matter in liquid state are farther apart and move slightly faster.

States of Matter 3. Gas: a state of matter that has no shape or volume. Will take on the shape and volume of a container if put in one. Its particles are farthest apart in this state and move very rapidly.

Substances (Matter) will exist in 1 of the 3 states: States of Matter Substances (Matter) will exist in 1 of the 3 states: Solid Liquid Gas Depending on the temperature of the substance
