What is the Purpose for Tonight? Inform parents about key details for the resit exam Identify strategies for parents to help with resit revision

What does the exam consist of What does the exam consist of? The timings of the exam are clearly stated on the study guides. Paper 1: 1 hour 45 mins 40% Fiction 19th century A. Reading: explicit/implicit quotes/language/structure/evaluation B. Writing: creative writing Paper 2: 2 hours 5 mins 60% Non fiction 20th and 21st century A. Reading: everything in Paper 1 plus 2 comparison questions ( 2 texts) B. Writing: transactional task ( letter/article/speech/review)

English Language Skills Reading: Analyse text ( language and structure) Evaluate- can students assess how successfully a text has been written? Appreciate the effect of language. Compare – make clear comparisons between texts and summarise the differences. Writing: Understand how to use language and structural devices to achieve effects in writing Use fluent and creative written expression. Form a fluent and formal line of argument. Use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout (SPaG)

Extra Revision Practice Lunch clubs: Monday - Friday 12.30-1.30 Half term revision: Students will be asked to sign up during next weeks lessons Homework It is imperative that a resit student attends at least one session during next week at lunch time and half term.

How can you help? Design a schedule to study from examples and notes from notebooks. Use Parent Portal for practice exams and mark schemes. Use I Site: 1. GCSE English (EDEXCEL) 2. GCSE Language ( extra practice – archived resources from last year) Study new vocabulary and personalised spelling words. Check targets from the baseline assessment ( front of notebooks). Use the package materials from tonight.

How can you help? Students need to send the teacher any questions they complete for feedback. Create cue/revision cards for key points to each question or key vocabulary.

How can you help ? Reading: Encourage students to read from a range of short and long texts ( magazines/travel articles/newspapers/online articles/books/social media) Ask them to summarise the extracts, for example in a discussion: 1. the main idea of the text 2. thoughts and feelings of the characters 3. a description of the characters 4. was the text engaging? Why? Why not? Explain. Talk about current affairs/what’s in the news/newspapers and BBC online articles.

How can you help ? Writing: Put ‘post its’ /revision cards around the house in key places: the fridge/mirrors/bathroom with key vocabulary on. There are vocabulary glossaries in the back of notebooks. Check spelling errors in notebooks/personalised spelling words in the back of notebooks and add in key places around the house on cards/ ‘post it’ notes. Ask students to give a review of a movie/restaurant/holiday. This creates a talking point and can then be developed into a writing task.

How can you help ? Spelling( some simple strategies): Split the longer words into syllables: nevertheless ne/ ver /the /less Say letters out loud ( even if you don’t pronounce them really) know / knee / interested Some spelling rules: ‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’ Look /cover/say/write/check
