Reading Workshop READING IS THINKING!! Focuses on comprehension strategies and specific skills Whole group mini-lesson, teacher models thinking, guided practice, independent practice, share thinking Students read “just right” books 30 minutes of Guided Reading Groups to practice skills and strategies Learn to track their thinking Includes one-on-one conferences with students and small group instruction

Math Your child will be learning to: Counts, writes, represents numbers to 120 Solve word problems within 20 and add 3 numbers Compare 2 digit numbers using math symbols Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine the unknown in an equation Use addition and subtraction strategies within 20 but fluently within 10 Mentally finds 10 more and 10 less of a number and explains Organizes, represents, and interprets data with up to 3 categories Builds and draws shapes with defining attributes Compose 2D and 3D shapes

Writing Your child will be learning to: Independently use correct capitalization and correct ending punctuation Begin to use a variety of sentence types and use correct subject/verb agreement Correctly use high frequency sight words. Use learned phonetic strategies to spell correctly Print legibly (upper & lower case letters, numbers, and spacing of words and sentences) Engage in the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) Write different genres: narrative, informational, and opinion

Homework Read 20 minutes every night…Read, read, read!!! Read with them, listen to them read, ask them questions about what they are reading! Will come home weekly in a homework folder. Neatly written in pencil Please check it together at home. Will begin after CoGat Testing.

Report Cards The standards-based report card will use the following system to report progress: 3 consistently meeting the standard 2 progressing toward meeting the standard 1 limited or minimum progress toward meeting the standard First report given out during Conference Week.

How can YOU help your child have a successful year? Check and empty the “SUPER” folder daily. Provide time for homework and reading everyday. Work on sight words and math facts throughout the year. Send a note in your child’s folder if they will have a transportation change. Keep me informed of any changes to contact numbers or email. Read, Read, Read (Have I said that?)

Absences Our instructional time begins at 7:50. Please make every effort to have your child to school on time. Absences affect our school CCRPI score. If you check your child out before 11:15 or check them in after 11:15 they are counted absent. Keep this in mind when scheduling appointments. We have several breaks worked into school calendar. Please avoid vacations on school days. All absences require a written note signed by a parent/guardian within 3 days.

Absences (Cobb County Policy) After 5 excused or unexcused absences, a letter is sent from the school administrator to the parent or guardian regarding attendance. After excessive excused or unexcused absences, a referral is automatically made to the school social worker on a referral form. (This does not apply for children with medically documented chronic illness.)

First Grade Testing SRI (Student Reading Inventory): August, December, March, May SMI (Student Math Inventory): August, December, March, May CoGat (Cognitive Abilities Test): September 4th – 6th

Conference Week October 14th – 18th. Early release all week at 12:10.
