What Human Geographers Want to Know WHERE? WHY? SO WHAT? (why we care)

Course Requirements Students will work individually, in pairs and in small group settings. The ability to work cooperatively is imperative to each student’s success in this course. Study groups are strongly encouraged, as well as afterschool tutoring if necessary. All work is to be completed neatly and in a timely manner.

CLASS POLICIES Students are expected to be in class on time and prepared to work, with all required materials. These include a spiral notebook, pencils, pens and colored pencils. The textbook is The Cultural Landscape, AP Edition, Rubenstein 12th edition. Plagiarism is not allowed and will be dealt with accordingly. Excellent attendance is necessary to ensure academic success. Many activities will require in-class participation. A note must be provided for every absence to obtain make-up work. No disrespectful behavior towards will be tolerated. Students must be able to work cooperatively with each other. Notebook checks will be at the end of each unit. No late notebooks will be accepted. Cell phones, make-up or any other electronic devices are prohibited in class, and will be confiscated.

SPHS ATTENDANCE POLICY A. A maximum of 7 full day absences/28 TOTAL class period absences are allowed during the current school year. B. At the 8th full day absence and/or 29th class period absence, FOR ANY REASON, the student’s name will appear on the Non-Participation STOP CLEARANCE LIST.

COURSEWORK HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK In each unit, students will complete a variety of assignments, (outlines of each chapter, maps, models, case studies, vocabulary, free response questions, quickwrites, etc.). Homework will be assigned and checked the next class period. Late work will receive partial or no credit. Please note that we may not have homework every night. EXAMS/FRQs At the end of each unit students will take a test which is set up to resemble the AP test. It will consist of multiple choice questions and Constructed Response Questions. This is to familiarize students with the test structure and make them more comfortable taking timed tests. Notebook checks will consist of all classwork and most homework. Students will also be expected to work cooperatively daily. Participation will count for approximately 10% of the final grade.
