At Arroyo Seco Campground Big Sur Mtns Astro 25 “Field Astronomy in the California Mountains” Fall 2019 – Sept 27-29 At Arroyo Seco Campground Big Sur Mtns

Pre-Trip Meeting Agenda Sign liability waivers! No one can go without signing a waiver form! Meal fees Distribute map packets Carpooling; I’ll give time to get to know each other and decide who wants to drive with whom. Our camp fees include 8 cars total, but I suspect we’ll have more, which will cost us extra, so please try to carpool with your new friends. Get cell numbers of drivers so we can stay current on Friday departure day. We’re not caravan’ing. You’ll decide on your own when to leave and arrive

To Bring… WARM clothes!! Personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag etc) Personal water, lunch food, any snacks to share Red headlamp (EverReady at Outdoor World works great, $20 or so) Binoculars if you have them. 3-ring binder notebook for notes, maps TP on trail, towel for any wash up, dipping in the (cool) Arroyo Seco river Camp chair for around camp and telescopes

We Supply: Dishes Silverware 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts Camp lighting Group cleaning tubs and wash clothes Astro experts and telescopes: JP, Kirk B, Chris K, and helpers Jason and Becky.

And Dr. Rick: me!

Directions to the Campground: 80 miles, about 90 minutes of drive time if traffic is decent

Get on Hwy 101 at Prunedale and stay on till Soledad, and offramp “Arroyo Seco Rd”

Stay on Arroyo Seco to the canyon and campgrounds

The last mile… We’re above Abbott Lake

One-way 1-lane camp road, so follow arrows. We’re at the “x” ‘s here

We have sites 36, 37, and the double site #41, which should be able to handle all of us. We may have as many as 20 people

Google Earth view

Schedule Friday: Arrive as soon as you can, but I won’t be there till maybe 5pm. Be sure to leave the most open spot(s) for the telescopes, and the best under-tree spot for the group kitchen. I’m not sure which campsite that will be, but be prepared to be “shoo’d” away from your chosen spot when I arrive if I judge it’s the logical spot for the kitchen and group meals spot. I’ll want that spot to be shady in the morning and late afternoon.

Friday Dinner: Pasta and salad I’ll want to have that done by twilight or 7:15pm Then by 8pm – to the telescopes and micro-lectures and viewing of deep sky wonders in a dark moonless sky! Be sure any personal lights are RED (like the red elastic band head lamps I recommend, from Outdoor world or Home Depot for example. Our group might stay up late, but you can sneak off to your tent after 11:30pm

Sunset planets include Jupiter and Saturn

If it’s cloudy, we’ll have a campfire lecture on stars and planet formation

Saturday morning 8:30am: Crepes Breakfast prep and dining / cleanup

My famous Saturday morning French Crepes !

~2 crepes per capita, at least

You’ll be getting it from “both barrels”!

Saturday Day: hike up the canyon to the swimming holes, with frequent stops at shady spots for micro-lectures on stars and planets along the way

Might be hot, but the water’s cool

Saturday 6pm: Dinner Prep – Asian Rice a’la Nolthenius

After Dinner Cleanup: More Telescope Viewing and Micro-Lectures After Dinner Cleanup: More Telescope Viewing and Micro-Lectures. Tonight, on galaxies, quasars, cosmology, the origin of the Universe

Long time Astro clubber Karl will bring along his humongo binoculars for views of the Summer Milky Way star forming regions

The summer Milky Way aims us towards the Center of our Galaxy

If it’s cloudy, we’ll again be around a campfire for lectures on the Big Questions: Where did we come from? Why? Is there ET out there?

Sunday morning 8:30am: Breakfast of home-made nutty gourmet granola and Rice Dream, with bananas and fruit

Sunday morning after breakfast: Solar lecture and viewing, and info on upcoming Mercury Transit across the Sun!

Then: Pack up camp and head to the creek for a final micro-lecture, short swim, and pass out final exams
