Why do flowers have seeds? What makes a seed grow? What does a plant need to survive? www.ks1resources.co.uk
SAMPLE SLIDE All flowering plants have flowers. Flowers have a very important job to do. Can you remember what their job is? Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show www.ks1resources.co.uk
Plants grow from seeds. Inside each seed is an embryo which is the beginning of a new plant. On the outside of a seed is the seed coat. This protects the seed and the embryo inside. SAMPLE SLIDE embryo Bean seed Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show www.ks1resources.co.uk
SAMPLE SLIDE What could it be grown in? What does the seed look like? How much water would it need? SAMPLE SLIDE How often would it need watering? What’s the best temperature for it? How much sunlight would it need? Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show www.ks1resources.co.uk
Investigating Conditions for Healthy Plant Growth Sc3/2.1 Plants (2014) Sc3/2.1a identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers Sc3/2.1b explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant Sc3/2.1c investigate the way in which water is transported within plants Sc3/2.1d explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal. Investigating Conditions for Healthy Plant Growth To determine prior knowledge, ask the following question: What do you think plants need to survive? Discuss how to test to determine which conditions are necessary for plant growth. Decide as a class the best procedure to use in conducting the experiment, the materials required, and how to record the observations. Ensure that only one variable is changed at a time and that all other conditions remain constant. Include the variables light, water, air, space, warmth, growing medium, and nutrients. Each group of children to be responsible for one of the conditions and must ensure that all the other conditions are kept constant. Children: Make predictions about which plants they think will grow best and why. Record their observations by writing, drawing or taking photographs of their group’s plant growth. Present their findings to the class. www.ks1resources.co.uk
