EYES FOR THE BLIND Senior Design 2020

Problem Statement The white cane is the most commonly used aid for the blind. Its limitations include: short detection range of only 1-2 steps inability to detect objects above the waist always having one arm occupied.

Proposed Solution Develop a hands-free system that will enable the blind to navigate The system will consist of two parts: to provide the user with awareness of objects below and above the waist level through sensory feedback. Hands free system-if we propose now, maybe won’t get adopted, but with enough R&D and improvements, could be the future. Paradigm shift, 10-20 years down the line, blind ppl use this system instead of a cane Our goal is to prove that this systems works. Want the system to have 2 parts. Future developments -> could enable the blind even more by integrating machine learning into a system like this (object recognition)

Visual Depiction Top + bottom -> giving more info than the cane does Glasses + shoes or belt Ultrasonic sensor

Connectivity Left shoe Right shoe Vibrating patch Arduino Pi 4 Arduino USB Arduino Glasses

CSE skills needed Contact: Experience working with Pi zero/3/4 Connect the Pi to phone via an app Arduino programming for ultrasonic sensors Contact: Soha Patil patils2016@my.fit.edu Motivated student Able to work through situations where things go wrong and adapt Familiar with… All of us have experience in atleast 1 language
