Writing a Proper Paragraph

A statement of what you are proving in the paragraph Topic Sentence A statement of what you are proving in the paragraph

Topic sentence:  The author indirectly characterizes Cherry Valance in Chapter 3.

What is happening in the story when the quote takes place? Context What is happening in the story when the quote takes place? Here’s my context. Here’s my quote.

In Chapter Three, Cherry and Ponyboy are part of the group walking home from the drive-in movie.  A group of Socs, including Cherry’s boyfriend, arrive, and a fight nearly breaks out between the rival groups. Cherry decides to leave with her boyfriend, but she makes an interesting statement to Pony before she leaves.

Tag the Quote Dally replies, Cherry says, Soda responds, Johnny adds, Whom are you quoting? Cherry says, Dally replies, Soda responds, Johnny adds, Ponyboy yells, Two-Bit jokes, The narrator explains, Darry says,

Cherry says to Pony,

What are the EXACT WORDS? Quotation What are the EXACT WORDS?

"I could fall in love with Dallas Winston "I could fall in love with Dallas Winston...I hope I never see him again, or I will"

Citation ( Author’s last name and page number) Where did you find the quote? ( Author’s last name and page number)

(Hinton 46).

Sample Quotation and Citation Comma before quoting a sentence Cherry said, “I could fall in love with Dallas Winston…I hope I never see him again or I will” (Hinton 46). End the sentence. Exact wording from the text—even the informal GOTTA is copied because I’m quoting exact wording! Author’s last name Tag the quote. Page number

Commentary What’s the “big picture”? Provide YOUR analysis and explanation of how your textual evidence support your topic sentence. Make your point!

This comment seems strange coming from Cherry This comment seems strange coming from Cherry.  Up to that point, she and Dally had only exchanged combative comments with each other.  In fact, she even throws a drink in his face after his dirty language offends her.  When she makes this statement to Ponyboy, it might suggest Dally is unlike anyone she's ever met.  Pony describes her as a very pretty cheerleader, so she is likely used to the same kind of treatment from boys. Dally has a "bad boy" personality with a different kind of confidence that she might find interesting.  Based on her other comments in the chapter, this may be more evidence that she is not too enamored with life as a Soc.

Ponyboy has conflict with Darry. Now you try it! Here’s your task: Use pages 13, 18, and 42, or 49-50 to support the topic sentence below. Provide all the elements needed to use supporting quotations. Topic Sentence Ponyboy has conflict with Darry.

Commentary Ideas – “The Big Picture” -What is the age difference between these boys? -How are Darry’s responsibilities important? -What is Ponyboy not considering about Darry’s life? Darry? -Why might Pony’s age affect his opinions? -What other life factors make their relationship stressful?
