1. Colony 2. Monarchy A country or area that is ruled by another country (colonial, colonists) Sentence: The 13 English colonies eventually became the United States of America. A political system ruled by a royal family Sentence: England at the time of colonization was ruled by Queen Elizabeth and was a monarchy.

3. Proprietary Colony 4. Royal Colony A colony given to an individual (proprietor) by the British monarchy Sentence: North Carolina was a proprietary colony given by King Charles II to eight of his friends.
