Year 6 additional teachers In Year 6 the children be taught the following subjects by our specialist teachers: PE – Mrs Swift French – Madame Townsend Music - BYMT teachers Our topics this year will include Ancient Benin, World War 1, Raging Rivers, Light and Electricity We have our planning time together every Wednesday afternoon. The classes will be taken by Mr Vitarana, Miss Hughes and Mrs East.

School Trips/Visitors School trips and visitors: Autumn: Bawdsey Manor, river trip (TBC), MacBeth workshop Spring: Horniman museum – Ancient Benin Summer: End of year treat Our outdoor enrichment trip is our trip to Bawdsey Manor! We will also be doing more outdoor projects to develop our school site such as bulb planting, growing vegetables, designing new features for the school grounds.

Homework Termly homework menus will be set with 10 options. Children must complete at least one English and one maths activity. Homework must be completed in homework books – writing must be in pencil or blue handwriting pen only and sheets must be stuck in. Homework books are due in on a Wednesday and will be returned on a Friday. Homework certificate awards: Bronze = 5 pieces of homework Silver = 8 Gold = 10 Platinum = 10 and at least 2 challenges

Reading Year 6 Please ensure your child has a reading book in school every day for quiet reading times. Children should be encouraged to read every day for a minimum of 10 minutes at home. Reading challenge – 3 quality books in a term (consider choice carefully) Reading SATs determine Hayes sets!

Reading Years 3-6 Quality Text Scheme After October Half Term, Hayes will be introducing a new Quality Text Scheme (QTS). The introduction of the QTS has been based on parent and teacher feedback and the books chosen have been trialled with very positive feedback. The QTS will be for all children, in years 3-6 that have completed the reading scheme and are free readers. Children will remain a free reader, but they will also choose a book from the QTS to supplement their reading and to read at home with an adult. You are invited to a parent workshop about the QTS on Monday 7th October. A parentmail will sent with more details nearer the time.

Social media and E-safety Children are taught two e-safety lessons every half term as part of the Computing curriculum. This half term we are looking at communicating using technology outside of school, including how to stay safe and behave appropriately on larger group chats and messenger services. To support the your child you can: be open and involved in discussions with your children about what they do online supervise your child’s use of technology model positive use of social media and technology Social media for children is not encouraged. If you have an e-safety concern, please contact the school immediately.

Phones on site We understand that children are more independent and some are allowed to walk to the gate etc. after school. Children are welcome to bring their phones in to school but we ask them to not have their phones out on the school site before and after school.

Before and after school It is important that children are on time. There are important early morning activities that children complete between 8:40 and 9:00am. Being late has an impact on the children’s learning. Going home: Children will only be permitted to go home with adults on their permissions list. Please inform the school in writing if you have a change in these or if you permit your child to walk to the gate/offsite by themselves.

Uniform, outdoor wear and PE kits From last year’s uniform consultation, we have revised the uniform policy which will be enforced this year. School uniform supports our school values of respect, responsibility and community. We will, therefore, be contacting parents via email when children have the incorrect uniform at school. Parents will be contacted again if the incorrect uniform persists. Please see the uniform letter from June 2019 for more detail.

Uniform continued… This half term, pupils can wear their winter or summer uniform. After October half term, only winter uniform should be worn. Please ensure that all pieces of school uniform are labelled with your child’s name and their current class. Your child will need a named PE kit (including trainers/tracksuits for outdoor PE) and their book bag in school at all times. Children are not permitted to wear nail varnish. No jewellery may be worn except small gold or silver stud earrings. Wellies

OPAL OPAL – Outdoor Play And Learning As the school improves play opportunities for your children, you may find the school is asking you for resources and is making changes about how the children use the school grounds. They may use more of the grounds, for more of the year. Your children may get a bit messier, be exposed to more challenges and have greater freedoms to play where, with whom and how they like. The experiences the school is fostering are essential for children’s physical and mental well-being and healthy and in line with all current good practice advice on health safety, well-being and development.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Relationships Education is compulsory in all primary schools. Hayes Primary School, as part of the Spring Partnership Trust, offers Sex Education as part of the PSHE curriculum and we have offered aspects of this to our year 5 and 6 pupils for a number of years. The Sex Education component of our curriculum will be taught in the second half of each Summer Term. Each year group is taught at a level that is appropriate to their age and developmental stage using simple, child friendly language and pictures.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) The programme covers the following areas: Year Group Topics covered EYFS       Growing up: how we have changed since we were babies Year 1  Boys’ and girls’ bodies; naming body parts Year 2             Boys’ and Girls’ bodies; body parts and respecting privacy (which    parts         of the body are private and why) Year 3              How babies grow and how boys’ and girls’ bodies change as they grow older. Year 4               Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and menstruation. Year 5                Puberty for boys and girls, and conception. Year 6             Puberty for boys and girls and understanding conception to birth of a baby.
