Newborn pattern of cerebral glucose metabolism. Newborn pattern of cerebral glucose metabolism. At this stage of development, glucose metabolism is most apparent in the sensorimotor cortex (a), cingulate cortex (b), thalamus (c), basal ganglia (d), brainstem (e), medial temporal region (f), and cerebellar vermis (g). Metabolic activity is low in most of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital cortex, as well as in the cerebellar cortex. Harry T.
