Russia’s Economic Evolution

Quick Write – 5 mins Pretend you lived in Russia during the Soviet Union. Describe what life would have been like for you living under communist conditions in no more than 3 sentences. Be prepared top share with the class.

Split into Groups – 3-5 mins If you prefer football over all sports, go to the LEFT side of the room. If you prefer Basketball over all sports, go to the RIGHT side of the room. No likey the sports: If you prefer Chinese food, go to the LEFT side of the room. If you prefer Mexican food, go to the RIGHT side of the room.

PROS and CONS – 5 mins. In your groups, brainstorm ideas for the pros and cons of both communism and a free market economy. EX. T-Chart’s, Venn Diagrams, etc…

DEBATE Time I will assign which stance your group will take. One side will be taking the position arguing that Communism is a superior economic system compared to capitalism, and Russia should have amended it to flourish in the current world economy. The other side will be taking the position arguing that Communism is an inferior economic system compared to capitalism, and Russia should have abolished the system. (Basically one side is arguing for communism and the other side is arguing against it and supporting the Free-Market economic system.)

Create an Argument – 10 mins Each team will have 10 minutes to get together and discuss the points that you will be arguing for or against. I ask that you be creative, be passionate, but overall BE RESPECTFUL!!!!!

Debate - Each side will take turns at presenting their argument. (2 mins. for each side) After each side has had the opportunity to speak their peace, the rest of the debate will be in the form of counter arguments. (1 min in length for each side) Ex. Both sides have argued for their position. Now each team will have the opportunity to take what was said and argue against it.

Closing Task - Rest of class time Journal Entry: Describe the economic challenges that led to the Soviet Union’s collapse and give your opinion over whether or not this economic change was for the best. Justify your answer. *You may use notes, or anything talked about today to assist you in your answer. You may not use your phones!!!!
