Coaching Boys into Men Nolan McKenna

Coaching Boys Into Men Is a nation wide program that is implemented into programs by coaches around the USA and around the world expanding the program to other countries in 2006

When and why was CBIM established? It is a subset of futures without violence that has been around for over 30 years It was established to help create a population of men that value respect, integrity, and nonviolence

How many members does CBIM claim to have and what is their typical demographic profile? CBIM focuses on fathers and coaches as advocates

What is CBIM’s broader mission or vision? Mentor men into a community that is respectful towards women

What form(s) of PBPV are addressed? Sexual, physical and verbal assault

What specific goals is CBMI seeking to achieve? To get new coaches and advocates to help implement this program in schools and sports across the country

What group(s) or population(s) does the organization serve and/or who are the potential beneficiaries? Supporters of CBIM include: the wait family foundation, the CDC, True dude, and Verizon This program benefits young men that gain these life skills, knowledge and respect This program also benefits women who will see the effects on the society. A safer community and one that respects women is good for everyone

What services, if any, does it provide. (i. e What services, if any, does it provide? (i.e. educational services, clothing drive, certified training, legal services, etc.) CBIM gives resources to coaches and advocates to help influence young men so that they will act in appropriate ways. There is a set paid program that if followed can make real differences

As a Coach why should I implement CBIM CBIM has been proven to positively impact athletes’ ability to intervene when witnessing abusive or disrespectful behavior. As leaders themselves, athletes are given the tools and vocubulary they need to stand up for respect and influence their school’s culture.

Which strategies and tactics are used most often. (e. g Which strategies and tactics are used most often? (e.g., petitions, protests) The program is set up as a coaches kit that tells coaches what to say and what to do to influence their team

Identify a message that you believe resonates with the public and explain why. The power of sports: Sports have tremendous influence in our culture and in the lives of young people. The principles of teamwork and fair play make sports an ideal platform to teach healthy relationship skills. Sports have such a huge impact and is one that our culture is centered around and can be a critical element to have when developing a healthy society.

Identify another message that resonates with you personally and explain why. As a future coach and teacher part of my mission is to develop a healthy community that is free of violence. My coaches have been hugely influential to me and I wish to do the same for my athletes.

What opposition does CBIM face? The opposition that CBIM faces is simply change. People agree that it is a good thing to do but adding things or changing processes that people have can be a difficult process.

What successes does CBIM celebrate? There have been many schools that can be used as anecdotal evidence to how well this program woks and the positive changes it can have on a community.

How deeply does CBIM dig into the structural roots of the social problem? I would say that CBIM digs deeply into the roots of the social problem. Instead of focusing on the problem it focuses on the cause of why boys and men do some of the things that they do. By fighting it at the source of the male socialization they are having much more success.

What is the most interesting thing about CBIM? The connection they have drawn in-between sports and the values of a society are very interesting.

How can individuals get involved with the organization? If an individual is a teacher or a coach of a boys team then they can implement the program themselves If an individual is not they can simply help to spread the word

What new understandings about social change did you gain from this project? That sports help build healthy relationships and by exploiting this connection we can change behavior and influence boys and men into becoming better members of our society by reducing violence.

Can this be used if you are a female coach? As far as I know females can implement this program if they coach a men's program because it is about the power dynamic between athlete and coach that makes a difference.
