Charging Electric Vehicles

Basics of Charging (EVSE) Type CHAdeMO SAE CCS Tesla Supercharger J1772 Outlet Description Direct Current Fast Charger (DCFC), adds 180-240 miles of charge per hour DCFC, adds 180-240 miles of charge per hour Level 2, adds 10-20 miles of charge per hour Level 1, adds 3-5 miles of charge per hour Used by Used by Asian model cars Used by European and American model cars Tesla only Most vehicles, Tesla can use with an adapter Any vehicle Voltage Industrial line required 240v line, same line as a dryer/oven Regular 120v outlet Usage For use along major public corridors For use at home, work place, or a public stop For use at home or workplace

Home Charging Most (80%+) EV charging happens in the home overnight Can be Level 1 or Level 2 Plug it in and go to bed! Like a cell phone We recommend that people start with a Level 1 charging station before investing in a Level 2 station for their home use unless they know they will be doing a lot of driving each day. In the event they have a long commute, a Level 2 charging station is recommended. Green Car Reports

Workplace charging Offering workplace charging is the best way to support employees making the switch to electric vehicles Workplace charging pairs well with solar Level 2 chargers are preferred Solar works well with workplace charging because the charging happens during the day. This means that solar panels work perfectly because they are at their peak energy generation during the day. Level 2 chargers work because people are generally parked for a long time during a work day. Finally, you can charge for workplace charging in a similar way to issuing parking passes. These are the actual chargers at the GPI office building!

Public charging Access to public chargers allows EVs to easily handle 100+ mile days Can be Level 2 or DC fast charge DC fast chargers are closest to gas station model: stop for a bit and refuel along the route Find public chargers on plugshare.com! Because most EV charging happens at home overnight, unless one is driving hundreds of miles a day, you usually don’t need to find public charging.

Destination Charging Many businesses are seeing benefits from hosting charging stations Hyvee, Goodwill, Lund’s and Byerly’s are all seeing increased traffic from charging stations Good site locations: Anywhere people stop for 2+ hours (theaters, restaurants, shops, ski hills, etc.) Become a Tesla charging partner at https://www.tesla.com/charging-partners

Charging in MN The network of charging stations in Minnesota grows every day The VW settlement has contributed $1,762,500 so far to charging infrastructure in MN, with more money potentially coming in 2020+ From plugshare.com

How to Find a Charging Station PlugShare  www.plugshare.com/ Alternative Fuels Database  https://afdc.energy.gov/stations/#/find/nearest?fuel=ELEC PlugShare is a crowd sourced map of EV charging stations. The AFCF is maintained by the government. Both are excellent ways to find charging stations, with many ways to customize your search to find different kinds of plugs/levels of charging.
