Presentation transcript:

Worthingway

Myth: Middle school starts at the same time as elementary school We start school at 8:50 ! That means you may have a little extra time in the morning, so you should be on time! Practice using an alarm (if you don’t already) so that you’ll be used to it. BE PREPARED & ON TIME!

Myth: You will run out of time between classes and will be late You have THREE minutes in between classes at Worthingway This is plenty of time to get to your next class! Plan to carry your books and binder for your morning classes through lunch, and your afternoon books and binder for after lunch. Stop at your locker sparingly!

Myth: Unlocking a locker in middle school is very hard Do NOT stress! Everyone is learning how to work their lock too. You WILL learn it! Practice at home with a lock, or practice when you come to school to pick up your schedule.

Myth: You do not have to work hard in your classes to be successful You have to work hard to be successful in your middle school classes You have to be proactive about your assignments Ask your teachers what you’ve missed It is YOUR responsibility to get and do any work, not your teachers’ Homework IS important; every point matters! Turn everything in, even if it’s not complete.

Myth: The Cards Room is where you go only when you get in trouble At Worthingway, the CARDS room is where you can go to get HELP! Your teacher may choose to send you to get some work done with Mr. Lisi in a small group. You can ask about going during lunch or community time to get some extra work done.

Myth: Your counselor only deals with “huge problems” Your counselor is here to support you 100%. She is NOT exclusively here for helping in a crisis! Make an appointment to see your counselor during lunch, community time, or homeroom Let her know if you’re having a bad day, you’re having an issue at home, or with a friend. She is here to listen!

Myth: Asking for help makes you seem dumb You have to be willing to ask your teachers/mentors/counselors/parents for help in middle school. It is the easiest road to being successful and having a better understanding of the content in each class! You will be the only one who’s hurt by a bad grade!

Myth: You don’t need to be organized to be successful As a middle schooler, you will have to manage assignments, notes, homework, projects, and more for 8 different classes! You may need to reconsider what you did in elementary school to stay organized. Make sure you are seeking help when you need it! Time management is key, especially when you are balancing extracurricular activities, with homework, friends, Netflix, etc...

Myth: 8th graders are mean 8th graders are people too! Remember, they were once in your shoes, and are more than willing to help you out. You just have to ask for help! Get to know your WEB leaders, classmates, teammates, etc.

Myth: Your friend group will be exactly the same in middle school Your friend group likely will NOT stay EXACTLY the same...and that’s OKAY! You have to meet new people every once in a while. Keep your mind open. You might actually enjoy it! Take time to get to know students who went to other elementary schools… You may be pleasantly surprised to make some new friends!

Myth: As a 7th grader, you can’t have an impact Your class makes up 50% of our school population! You can absolutely have an impact! Get involved in school clubs and teams to have an even bigger impact. You can take a stand and say no to drama. You are each a LEADER in your own way. Take a stand! Be yourself.

Myth: It’s lame to get involved There are TONS of awesome ways to get involved in middle school! Sports Teams/Events Clubs Canteens And remember...it’s okay to be different!
