God’s gifts often turn into God’s greatest competition

“One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the Last Day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.” --John Piper--

--Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT) I said to myself, “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless. So I said, “Laughter is silly. What good does it do to seek pleasure?” After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine. (cont’d) --Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT)

--Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT) And while still seeking wisdom I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world… I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. (cont’d) --Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT)

--Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT) I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire! So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me. Anything I wanted, I would take. (cont’d) --Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT)

--Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT) I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors. But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere. --Ecclesiastes 2:1-3, 8-11 (NLT)

Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. --Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NLT)

“The present inordinate attachment to every form of entertainment is evidence that the inner life of modern man is in serious decline.” --A.W. Tozer--

Amnon became so obsessed with Tamar that he became ill Amnon became so obsessed with Tamar that he became ill. She was a virgin, and Amnon thought he could never have her. --2 Samuel 13:2 (NLT)

But Amnon wouldn’t listen to her, and since he was stronger than she was, he raped her. --2 Samuel 13:14 (NLT)

Then suddenly Amnon’s love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. “Get out of here!” he snarled at her. --2 Samuel 13:15 (NLT)

So they shouted louder, and following their normal custom, they cut themselves with knives and swords until the blood gushed out. --1 Kings 18:28 (NLT)]
