DO NOW Define nationalism in your own words. List 3-4 things that you think make a country/nation

Nationalism

Students will… Define nationalism, and explain how nationalism, cultural geography, and physical geography contributed to the unification of nations, such as Germany and Italy. (W.17)

So… what makes a country? In order for a “country” to be a “country” it must Have internationally recognized boundaries Have a government Have sovereignty (no other State can have power over it) Be recognized as a country by other countries

Nationalism Develops Nationalism – belief that people’s greatest loyalty should not be to a king or an empire, but to a nation of people who share a common culture and history.

Nationalism Discussion Do you think Nationalism is a good thing or a bad thing? Could Nationalism lead to discrimination within a country? What are some examples of nationalism?

Nation-State Had its own independent government. Defends the nation’s territory and way of life. Represents the nation to the rest of the world. 1815 – only France, England, and Spain were nation-states.

Create Your Own Country You’ll be working in groups to create a country based on a common history and customs. Miss Tyler will give you an interest to represent the common foundation you and your group members have. Design your country around this interest.
