Literacy focus at COSAT Why we do what we do

Why we do what we do as language teachers We understand the importance of literacy. We do not underestimate the role of English in today’s world. When one understands that a firm grasp of English is necessary to engage meaningfully with the content of other subjects, one has the added responsibility to ensure that the learners are fully able to express themselves clearly and accurately in English. For this reason the target language is always maintained in presenting lessons. isiXhosa presents an extra set-work above and beyond what is prescribed by the Department.

What programmes do we offer? Each class has a library period per week. We have a book club. We have 5 Grade 10 learners who assist primary school learners with reading once a week. We embarked on this initiative with a neighbouring school last term, and the impact is phenomenal.

During the library period the focus on poetry and short stories. They are encouraged to write their own poems and short stories. They take out library books and submit book reviews. The book club members make recommendations on which titles to read. For Mandela day we encourage some learners to go read at old age homes and crèches.

Public speaking and Mot court The Toast Masters visit our school once a week to develop the potential of learners in public speaking once a week. Great progress is made in this regard. Our learners participate in Mot Court competitions where they address constitutional – and human rights issues. We have a very competent debating club and some of our learners have been selected for Provincial and National teams.
