Session 5C: Curb Management Tuesday, June 25, 2019 Session 5C: Curb Management 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM Welcome to Session 5C: Curb Management. I’m Ryan Zellers, and I’m a Senior Transportation Engineer at the San Diego office of Michael Baker International and serve as a consultant City Traffic Engineer for the small town of Del Mar, just north of San Diego. I’m also one of the past presidents of the ITE San Diego Section back in 2016. We’re here to talk about curb. Curb is my favorite treatment for the edge of pavement, followed closely by curb and gutter, AC berm, and aggregate shoulder. ------- I mean, they’re all good, but if I had to choose one, curb would be it. Apparently we have a lot of fans of curb out in the audience too, or you wouldn’t be here, am I right? So how do you manage that curb? Well, that’s what you’re here to find out! Let’s introduce our panel of experts to see what they have to offer…

Session 5C – Curb Management Jay Dinkins | City of Santa Monica David Wasserman | Fehr & Peers Doug Smith | HDR

Speaker #1 Jay Dinkins | City of Santa Monica “Curb Allocation and Shared Mobility Devices” BIO: Our first speaker is Jay Dinkins – a Transportation Engineer with the City of Santa Monica. He’s a PE with a BS degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M, over 18 years of experience in the industry, and serves as Past President of the ITE Southern California Section. Jay’s main focus over the last 8 years has been implementing the expansion of Metro’s Exposition Light Rail Line to downtown Santa Monica, but his other duties include active transportation improvements and expanding the City’s Advanced Traffic Management System. Jay and his team are responsible for managing Santa Monica’s ever-evolving curb space and public right-of-way allocation issues and providing adaptive solutions when faced with new players.

On his spare time, he like learning macramé, watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta, and moonlights as a body double for Chris Hemsworth. Here to present “Curb Allocation and Shared Mobility Devices”, Mr. Jay Dinkins.

Speaker #2 David Wasserman | Fehr & Peers “Envisioning the Future of the Curb with Procedural Streets” BIO: David Wasserman, AICP is a transportation planner and data scientist at Fehr & Peers. As a planning technologist, he strives to develop analytical frameworks and compelling visual communications that can scale to the scope of the problems many regions contend with. David is passionate about applying scientific computing and spatial analysis towards the development of effective transportation planning solutions that help build safe, accessible, and sustainable communities.

During my internet sleuthing, I uncovered that David was also an Eagle Scout, and a former life guard at Disney World in Orlando. Here to discuss “Envisioning the Future of the Curb with Procedural Streets” is David Wasserman.

Speaker #3 Doug Smith | HDR “Responding to the Needs of Emerging Technologies in Airport Operations: How JWA is Meeting the Demand of TNCs” BIO: Doug is the Business Class Area Manager for Traffic Engineering and ATST for HDR Inc. in southern California. He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and attended Northeastern University as well as University of California, Irvine. He has over 35 years of broad experience in the development and delivery of transportation, traffic engineering and ITS projects throughout the US. Doug has been involved with ITE at the local, District, National level, and Planetary level.

But it’s just a reminder of the upcoming ITE Annual Meeting in Austin Texas, July 21-24. Now rresenting on “Responding to the Needs of Emerging Technologies in Airport Operations: How JWA is Meeting the Demand of TNCs”, Douglas Smith.
