Argumentative elements in writing lesson BY Evie (BAD cop) and Isabella (good cop) Make sure to take notes >:)

Claim A writer's position or opinion regarding a problem or issue Ex: Exotic animals shouldn't be pets.

Hook element Hook elements are words, phrases, and examples that hook you into a song, movie, writing, etc. Types of hooks include... Action, Analogy, Command to the reader, Bold statement, Characters thoughts and feelings, and MUCH more! Ex: Have you ever thought about...

Signal words Words used when making the opposing view statement (arguing) Ex: Many argue that…/However…

Opposing viewpoints Any objection to the author's claim Ex: Exotic Animals Make Cool Pets.

Counter Argument A counter argument is a viewpoint that opposes an argument. It also gives a chance to set up a rebuttal and show why your viewpoint is the best.

statistics Any facts or percentages that can make you sound smart or convincing Ex: 75% of people like chocolate ice cream the best.

Charged language Making people feel strong emotions so they support you. Ex: This is not right! We can change this!

Introduction Should include claim, main reasoning, and hook! This is the beginning make sure you interest and captivate your readers in this paragraph! This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND.

Body Includes at least 3 paragraphs, reasons, and evidence! This is where you use all those convincing methods you learned. ;) 

conclusion This is where you restate your claim and reasons. It should also include your call to action. Remember this is the last place to convince your readers!
