The Week of April 1st – April 5th Our 1st Grade Classroom News The Week of April 1st – April 5th Email: mejones@delranschools.org Fundations Reading & Writing We continue Unit 11 in Fundations where your child is learning about the vowel-consonant-e syllable type or v-e syllable. This week, we will work on adding a suffix –s to v-e syllable words. Some practice words include swipe, jokes, brave, prizes, likes, white, plates, tape, whale, poles, homes, shapes, notes and bikes. Trick words this week are none and nothing. Please have your child practice tapping out, spelling, and writing these words at home! During Reading Workshop, we will celebrate the end of our Unit 3 by preparing for a Readers Theater Performance! Your child will be placed into a group and given a role- Frog, Toad, or Narrator. Each day, they will work with their group on acting out their story, reading with fluency, and sounding like the character they are assigned! We will perform for one another on Friday!  During Read Aloud we will read another chapter book titled Poppleton Everyday. We will focus on retelling, getting to know characters, making predictions, and comparing and contrasting two characters in a story. Poppleton is a pig, so our shared reading poem is Ten Squeaky Clean Pigs! During Writing Workshop we will continue and finish up our Book Reviews! We will revise our finished reviews with a checklist and edit our writing (making sure our sentences all have S.W.A.G!) We will create a book cover for our finished review and share them with others. The goal is to convince someone else to want to read the book we are writing about and recommending!  Reminders Math & Social Studies In Math, we begin Chapter 8: Measurement and Time. In this chapter, we will learn about measuring length and time. There are MANY vocabulary words in your child’s Bear Binder! Please read and study them at home!  Next week, we will: Compare lengths Compare and then ORDER lengths (short, shorter, shortest or long, longer, longest) Measure the lengths of objects using nonstandard measurement units (ex: cubes, pennies) Use the problem solving strategy of guess, check, and revise to solve problems! Check My Progress Quiz on Friday (Lessons 1-4) In Social Studies, we begin Unit 5: Looking at Our Country! We will explore a map of the United States. We will learn about important symbols of our country such as the American flag, Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, and many more! Important Reminders! Single Session Day- Thursday, April 4th. Dismissal will be at 1:00. Please pack a small snack and lunch for your child. We will eat in the classroom. Spring Break is from April 19th-April 28th. We return Monday, April 29th. Monday: Health Tuesday: Music Wednesday: Library Thursday: Single Session/Club Day Friday: Art
