Because presidential elections aren’t won by the popular vote... The electoral college Because presidential elections aren’t won by the popular vote...

Electoral College System by which individual elections in each state determine who wins the Presidential election. Red states are ones that went to the Republicans (Conservatives). Blue States went to Democrats (liberals).

Popular Vote vs. Electoral College In an election where the “popular vote” determines the winner, whoever gets more votes wins. THE U.S. DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT!!!!!!! Under the electoral college the electoral points won determine who will win the election. Each state is worth a certain number of electoral points. We are worth 55 points. That’s a lot. The next biggest is Texas with 38 points. The number of electoral points each state is worth is determined by population. The winner of the popular vote in each state takes all of the electoral points from that state. A candidate must win 270 points (51%) in order to win the election.

But why, you ask? A long time ago, people were worried that without an electoral college, the most populous states with the most amount of people would control elections. Small states will get screwed over and over again by big states. Also, the people like Alexander Hamilton and other political thinkers did not want idiots to vote other idiots in office.

Discussion Norms Listen respectfully, without interrupting. Respect one another’s views. Criticize ideas, not individuals. Commit to learning, not debating. Avoid blame and speculation. Avoid inflammatory language.

Current State of our Election Systems Socratic Seminar Thinking about the comparative democracy work, the electoral college and gerrymandering – What word or words would you use to describe our current election system? (All) Do you think gerrymandering should be abolished? Why or why not? Is the Electoral College helpful or harmful to American democracy? Does every vote counts? Does the Electoral College disenfranchise voters? Why should we or shouldn’t we abolish the Electoral College? What changes need to be made to our election system to be fairer and more balanced?
