RUMP

How to Effectively Take Notes COLORS Intentionally color code your notes Example: If you’re taking notes over the definitions of vocabulary words, then each word and its definition need to be written in the same color.

How to Effectively Take Notes DRAW PICTURES Draw pictures that will help you remember the information. Example: If you’re trying to remember the water cycle, draw a rough sketch as you take the notes.

How to Effectively Take Notes READ NOTES ALOUD Listen to the teacher say the notes, and also read them aloud when you get home. Example: If you come across an unfamiliar word in class, and its pronunciation is tricky, the teacher may say the word three times, and then ask you to repeat after her. Then you’ll remember how to pronounce the word.

THE MORE YOU ENGAGE WITH THE NOTES, THE BETTER. USING A VARIETY OF STUDYING TACTICS WILL ENSURE THAT YOU WILL REMEMBER THE INFORMATION.

The next time you have a quiz in social studies in which you must remember dates, try these effective methods of note taking! The next time you have a test in science in which you must match definitions of vocabulary words, try these effective methods of note taking!

RUMP

What is RUMP? When should you use RUMP?

Let’s use the effective note-taking strategies today! Get out FOUR different colors (highlighters, markers, pens, anything!) Draw a rough sketch next to each piece of information. This sketch should reflect the information and should allow you to remember the information better. Repeat after Ms. Overton.

R - Read the passage (if applicable), the question, and the answer choices.

U - Underline key parts of the question.

M - Mark the text for evidence that backs up the answer choice AND briefly explain in the margins why you chose this answer.

P - Process of elimination - Cross out AT LEAST TWO answer choices that you know are NOT the correct answer to the question.

Assignment Due Friday 9/13: You and your partner are going to come up with a catchy jingle or song to remember RUMP. Here are some examples of what I’m talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOXYMRcWbF8 Sing the alphabet - What tune is this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHp7sMqPL0g

What does Ms. Overton Expect? Ms. Overton expects you to perform the song in front of the class. You will be randomly chosen to perform either Friday or Monday, so be prepared on Friday! Tell us the tune of your song. You may use your notes while singing. While performing, your voice is loud and clear with very few mistakes. (It sounds like you practiced.)

What does Ms. Overton Expect? You may add/remove words in order to fit the song, but the overall concepts of RUMP must stay the same. You and your partner will BOTH sing (either together or take turns).

You and your partner will receive separate grades. Rubric RUBRIC - 100-point Progression Creativity: 20 points Presentation: 30 points Content and Flow of Song (Includes all parts of RUMP and the words of the song flow with your chosen tune): 50 points
