The Requirements

When analyzing ANY source, one should: Sources Analyzing When analyzing ANY source, one should: Identify & Explain the context of the source CONTEXT: the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc. Background info! Identify & Explain the perspective of the source (purpose/message) Source’s Creator: Artist, speaker, singer, photographer Use evidence from the source that supports this perspective If possible, try to identify who may share this perspective!

When analyzing IDEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE, consider: WHO’S PERSPECTIVE? Attitude towards the topic? Sympathizer/Supporter/Critic OR No opinion (neutral) Individualist or collectivist Capitalist, socialist, communist, fascist etc. Context? Time? Location? Position? (Gov’t official etc, slave etc) Bias? May be one of the above, or any combination of all of them!

Interpretation of Sources cont. Students experience challenges when they present an extensive discussion of events or theories such as wandering off task offering historical error. In attempting to embed extensive pieces of evidence, something they are not required to do to be successful in Assignment I, students may be using time that could be better used in the studying of the source in Assignment II Interpretation of Sources cont.

It is important for you to look at every source critically and question why certain data or information is selectively presented and why other information may be omitted. Unless the source contains every aspect of information or data regarding the issue highlighted, there is a certain degree of bias or perspective inherent in the source.
