“Assessment” vs “Test” w Why say “Assessment” instead of “Test”? •“Assessment” means more than just a “test”. “Assessments” may include: •portfolios - a collection of student work •anecdotal records - teacher notes on how students are doing •presentations - students showing what they know •tests - classroom tests, state tests, other •projects - students demonstrating what they know •other

Two Basic Types of Assessments w Criterion-referenced or Standards-Based •student performance is measured against a set standard • Norm-referenced - student performance is measured against the performance of other students
