Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results

But, before why, what and how we have to ask: Who are we? Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Following leads… in some answers from the survey… … we'd have to ask if it would be possible... At the moment I don't know what to say I don't know I don't know if it possible but it is very interesting I don't think for the moment …our cataloguing software wouldn't allow … It's not in our level (the EDC) that such a decision can be taken Not clear how this would work as we could not distinguish EU related material … Nous n'avons pas encore envisagé cette question… …I don't have the authority … We are too small to share our collection… We don't have capacity to do it Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Following leads… in some answers from the survey… This is also our picture: documentation centers of I don´t know, not clear, dont have, we are too small. So, who are we?... Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Following leads… in some answers from the survey… We are EDCs a little bit lost in a new age, without a direction; fragile; insecure. Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Following leads… in some answers from the survey… And are we now crucial for our academic institutions? Are we crucial, as physical space, to EU learning and research? Are we still visible in our host structure? Maybe ECLAS can help us to reinvent the EDC of the 21 st century. Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century Main results (126 responses): Quite a significant number of the respondents would be interested in collaborating with the European Commission Central Library: 62 EDCs (49%) would be kind to share its database, academic research papers or repository with ECLAS.

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century Forty-five EDCs mentioned, mainly under other, that at the moment they are not sure how to answer this question (see top row). In addition, technical difficulties were mentioned such as: If there were a handy technical solution I suppose the library´s directorate would agree to link to our local catalogue, in which the EDC collection is integrated; and more information is needed on the proposal and technical requirements for us to give an answer.

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century Further, for the Italian EDCs, the decision should be taken by the whole network: the decision must be made by the EDCs Italian network because it is a network project. Finally, two EDCs said they would need more information: We would like to have some more information and details about ECLAS and how it works. This should be investigated further if 62 EDCs is a critical mass required for the EC to start such collaboration.

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century 1.EDCs are open for this partnership; 2.EDCs need synergies to survive; 3.EDCs need to offer new services; 4.EDCs need to look for new profile of users: the profile of users of the 21 st century.

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century 1.The catalogue as an unique and common point of searching documents? 2.Commercial electronic resources (ex: LexisNexis, Westlaw)? 3.Long-term library loans?

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century Cataloguing, classification and indexing in an unique software; Sharing electronic resources, sharing all our IP-Addresses; Inform ECLAS of our lists of bibliography and EU research fields.

Why, What and How to work with ECLAS: survey results Nuno Henriques | EDC: Catholic University of Portugal - Oporto Pan-European Working Group Meeting of European Documentation Centres The challenges for the EDCs work in the 21st century Maybe ECLAS could be part of the solution…
