German command forms Part !!

Some of you still need some clarification on commands. I hope this helps. Before I told you there are 3 forms for commands. There are actually 4. The other powerpoint stated it and I think Ms. Dillon did too. I will go over all 4 here.

When speaking to one person… Use the du form of the verb. Only with the du form, you take off the -st ending. Du is NOT present in the actual command.

Example Du commands Geh nach Hause! – Go home! Komm her! – Come here! Lass mich allein! – Leave me alone! Iss das Eis! (du form is stem changing) – Eat ice-cream! Mach deine Hausaufgaben! – Do your homework!

When speaking with more than one person informally… Use the ihr form of the verb. Ihr is not present in the command.

Example ihr commands Esst die Pizza! – Eat pizza! Geht zur Party! – Go to the party! Spielt Fussball! – Play soccer! Tanzt! – Dance!

When speaking formally… Use the Sie form of the verb. In this form you DO keep the Sie in the command. Usually you will say please with these commands because of the formality.

Example Sie commands Gehen Sie zur Schule, bitte! – Go to school, please! Essen Sie das Abendessen, bitte! – Eat dinner, please! Machen Sie die Hausaufgaben, bitte! – Do homework, please! Spielen Sie das Klavier, bitte! – Play the piano, please!

Wir form When you want to say Lets… you use the wir form of the verb. Wir is present in the command but it is in second position.

Example wir commands Lesen wir! – Lets read! Tanzen wir! – Lets dance! Gehen wir nach Hause! – Lets go home!
