ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS What events led to the United States entering World War II? How did the war impact Georgia?

Which European countries were led by dictators during World War II? Germany Italy Japan Soviet Union

How did the Lend-Lease Act(1941) work? Britain was able to borrow or lease U.S. ships, arms, supplies, & food to help in its war effort against Germany.

What action brought the U.S. into World War II? The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, brought the United States into the war.

What roles did the Tuskeegee Airmen and women play in World War II? Tuskeegee Airmen –Black aviators trained at Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama. They escorted bombers on missions over Europe. Women served in all branches of the military. At home, they worked in factories, as nurses, journalists, mechanics, and other jobs held by men who were serving in the military.

The Holocaust As the Nazi party gained power in Germany, it began viewing minorities, particularly Jews, as inferior. It blamed Jews for Germany’s problems. Eventually the Nazis began programs to eliminate all Jewish people by killing them.

Georgians in World War II Carl Vinson: “Father of the Two Ocean Navy” Richard Russell Georgia senator who helped build and develop America’s military strength during World War II.

CARL VINSON representative in Congress for more than 50 years sponsored legislation creating the U.S. Army Air Corps, which later became the U.S. Air Force. encouraged the development of a Navy fleet in the Pacific, earning him the nickname “Father of the Two Ocean Navy”.

Georgia Facilities Fort Benning was the home of the U.S. Infantry and the largest infantry training school in the world. Fort McPherson was a major induction center for newly drafted soldiers from all over the country.

Georgia Facilities Bell Aircraft Corporation was a plant located in Marietta tat produced B-29 bombers, America’s largest military plane, during the war. Savannah & Brunswick shipyards produced Liberty ships that carried large cargo items & military supplies to Europe.
