INTRODUCTION TO Wi-Fi TECHNOLOGY

What is Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi, or Wireless Fidelity, is freedom Allows us to connect to the Internet from anywhere without wires. Send and receive data indoors and out; anywhere within the range of a base station. Fast.

Wi-Fi Hotspot A region, covered by Wi-Fi. Any location in which wireless technology available for use to consumers. Airports, coffee shops, and so on.

Wi-Fi Connects You Anywhere Connects you to others and to the Internet. Gives freedom to change locations - and to have full access to your files, office and network connections wherever you are.

TYPES OF WI-Fl IEEE 802.llb - the ‘B’ standard IEEE 802.lla - WI-Fi 5 IEEE 802.llg -the ‘G’ standard

IEEE 802.llb - the ‘B’ standard 802.ll b protocols began appearing in the marketplace in late 1999. Operates in the 2.4 GHz radio spectrum, which is also shared with devices such as cordless phones and microwave ovens. 802.llb will operate within a 100- 150 feet range. Theoretical maximum transfer speed is 11Mbps The a dual real world performance is about 4- 6Mbps

IEEE 802.lla - WI-FI 5 Theoretical maximum speed of 54 Mbps. The actual real-world performance of ‘A’ is 15- 20 Mbps, or about four times faster than 802.llb. It operates in the5 GHz band Performs better in high density areas. A technology features more non-overlapping channels

IEEE 802.llg -the ‘G’ standard Introduced in 2003 Combines many of the best features of the previous two standards. (B) Working distance of 100- 150 feet. The G standard uses 2.4 GHz radio frequencies. (A) Shares the advantage of extremely fast data throughput. Speeds of 15 - 20 Mbps

Connecting Two PCs Using an Access Point connect the RJ45 cable to the NIC. Connect the other side to the LAN port of the Access Point. Get the LAN on the same IP range as the Access Point Ping. Access the web server of the Access Point. Plugged in the PCI wireless card. Let the card get detected by the System. Go to ‘Wireless Network Connections’ properties. Scroll down to the ‘TCP/IP connection’ properties. Assign an IP to the wireless card with the first three metrics.

Connecting Two PCs using a Wireless Router Wireless routers are Access Points that have the Internet port for a DSL or cable modem connection, and in most cases, also has a 4-port switch. Here is how you will have to go about getting it running. Connect a RJ45 cable to the Internet port of the router. Observe whether all the LEDs are behaving properly. On the first system, wireless card plugged in. Get the wireless Card on the same IP range as the router is. Once router is detected by the wireless card, launch your browser and Type in “http://<IP address of router>”. This will launch the configuration utility of the router.

Sharing An Internet Connection Using A Wireless Router Need some information handy like PPPoE, user name and password which is provided by the ISP, subnet mask, default gateway, and so on. When you log in to the Web server of the router, you will be asked to give this information.

Sharing An Internet Connection Using An Access Point Need third party software to share internet. For the setup, leave ‘Use Single NIC mode’ option unchecked. SyGate will show the appropriate connections in ‘Direct Internet /ISP Connections’, as well as ‘1’ In ‘Local Area Network Connection’. The ‘Direct Internet/ISP Connection would have a ‘Local Area Network Connection’ if you have more than one LAN card or dial-up connection. To share a dial-up connection, you would first have to set up one in Windows, and then add it in SyGate. Now select the LAN card that connects your PC to the Access Point in ‘1’ within ‘Local Area Network Connection’.

Comparison with Bluetooth Technology short-range wireless connection. Benefits:- (1)Wireless (2) inexpensive (3) Not require to do anything to make it work. Operate in the 2.45 Gigahertz frequency range. Low power limits the range to about 10 meters. Each device is assigned a unique 48-bit address. Connections can be point-to-point or multipoint. Maximum transmission rate of only 1 Mbps

Wi-Fi:- Data transmission rates approaching 54Mbps. Operates in the 2.4 GHz band. Transmit data at distances of well over 100 feet. Strong security protocols Bluetooth products make it easy to connect various electronic devices to each other without the need for clumsy cables, while 802.11-based Wi-Fi products were designed as a replacement for the wired LAN.

Advantages Uses an unlicensed bit of the broadcast spectrum. Allows a dynamic network to be grown. More Reliable & Bug free Wi-Fi products. Lowered prices Possible to move about without breaking the network connection

Disadvantages A degradation in performance. Power consumption is high. Uses WEP protocol for protection. Limited range..
