History

Situation – fall of 2004 Problems: Library had to deal with tons of digital informationLibrary had to deal with tons of digital information No solid distribution modelNo solid distribution model Opportunities: The library as a learning spaceThe library as a learning space The library as partner in educationThe library as partner in education

Idealisme in learning communities Fontys wants more from the library than just ‘providing access to information’ Fontys wants a strong relationship between education and information

So...our librarians needed to: 1.Know more about needs of our users (teachers/students/institutions) 2.Find more quality information for them 3.Share more with learners, educators and others 4.Support more users, online and offline To do all that, the library needed a new [interactive] platform

Fontys Library Portal The Fontys Library Portal The Fontys Library Portal needs to be more than just a website; it should be a portal of knowledge where we [the library] can share our expertise and offer quality information services.

The basic idea… Weblog for newsWeblog for news Wiki for background informationWiki for background information iPort for electronic resourcesiPort for electronic resources AND … Multiple ways of access!

Multiple ways of access 1.Content as glue 2.Embed library in other platforms 3.24/7 access 4.Development of tools

1. Content as glue

Search simultaneously in both library weblog & wikiSearch simultaneously in both library weblog & wiki Save searches as RSS feedSave searches as RSS feed Continue search in library databases or even Google Continue search in library databases or even Google Stay in same interfaceStay in same interface Example 1

Example 2 Based on the topic of interest, readers of the library weblog get quick and easy access to relevant databases

New and (often) easy-to-use technology to dynamically mix up library content with other services: RSS-Webparts-iFrames-OAI-SRU-SFX-OpenURL-XML-API’s Embed library in other platforms

Example from our wiki: using Google Maps to locate the nearest Fontys library

3. 24/7 access Worldwide access to library eResourcesWorldwide access to library eResources Worldwide access to library weblog and wikiWorldwide access to library weblog and wiki (library as knowledgeportal) Access when you need it through RSS (information comes to the user)Access when you need it through RSS (information comes to the user) −Personal use (RSS reader like Bloglines.com, Google Reader or Netvibes.com) −Web (website, internal web, eLearning environment)
