700 B.C. Greek Black-Figure Pottery Technique By Nic Peterson

Location Started in Corinth and later Athens. Was also found in Laconia, Boeotia, eastern Greece and Italy.

Basic information Used reddish orange clay Large pieces were made in sections Pottery shape- changed over time but was usually round with a top lip that curved out and some kind of handle Painted Figures- very slim and lean (almost feline) with a small torsos and larger upper body.

Its makers Black-figure painting on vases was the first art style to give rise to a significant number of identifiable artists. Masters made it professionally and sold their pieces to make their living

How painted artwork was made Figures and ornaments were painted on the body of the vessel using shapes and colors that looked like silhouettes. Delicate contours were carved into the paint before firing, then details could be reinforced and highlighted with opaque colors, usually white and red.
