Smoking Related Deaths in N.J. 12,800 persons die each year related to smoking and other uses of tobacco 7,700 children have lost at least one parent to smoking-caused death At current trends, 134,000 children alive today, who have started to smoke, will die from tobacco related diseases

Tobacco Use in New Jersey Middle School use of tobacco in 2001 survey Lifetime use = 25% Past 30 days use = 7.2% Under the age of 18, youth who become new, daily smokers each year = 20,100 in NJ Packs of cigarettes bought or smoked by young people each year = 21 million packs Adults who smoke in NJ as of 2003 = 21.4%

Good News about Tobacco Control in New Jersey Smoking among middle school students dropped by 42% in New Jersey since the inception of NJ Tobacco Control Program in lifetime use of tobacco = 38.4% 2001 lifetime us of tobacco dropped to 25.2%

Monetary Costs in New Jersey Annual health care expenditures directly caused by tobacco use - $2.6 Billion State Medicaid payments - $554 Million Non-health related costs estimated e.g. decline in productivity - $1.1 Billion

Costs Savings for Smoking Cessation Programs 1000 Youth kept from smoking: Decline of $12 million in future health care costs 1000 Adults prompted to quit: Decline of $8 million in future health care costs.

Camden County Updates: C.A.T. Coalition expanding mandate to prevention and education against abuse of Alcohol C.A.T. Presentations per year – Rivershark Games reached 48,000 in 2004 Cost of the Quit Center at Kennedy is $ R.E.B.E.L. – four programs from different schools. In the county, there has been a 10% drop in teen- age smoking where there have been R.E.B.E.L. clubs. Before the State cut the funds for C.A.T. by a third, the county coalition had a mini-grant program to focus on tobacco use issues and smoking cessation
