MASS, DENSITY, VOLUME, & BUOYANCY! WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY?

Mass is how much matter an object has MASS (COPY ONTO PAPER) Mass is how heavy something is without gravity (COPY) Another way of describing mass is: Mass is how much matter an object has Mass is measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg)

Examples of MASS

DENSITY (COPY ONTO PAPER) Sometimes density is easy to sense. If two objects have exactly the same size and shape, the denser one may feel heavier. But if their densities are very close together, it will be hard to tell a difference. The only way to decide the density of a substance is to measure its mass and its volume, then divide. Units for density g/cm3

DENSITY DEFINITION: (COPY) The density of a material is defined as its mass per unit volume. FORMULA (COPY) Density = Mass ÷ Volume

EXAMPLES OF DENSITY

VOLUME The amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies (COPY) For this example the volume is 4×5×10 = 200 units3 Units of volume include: cubic centimeters (cm3), cubic meters (m3), liters (COPY)

EXAMPLES OF VOLUME

Upward force exerted on an object immersed in a fluid. BUOYANCY Upward force exerted on an object immersed in a fluid.
