Using Moles to Count Atoms A mole is a unit of amount like a dozen, gross or ream is used to represent a given amount.

Mole Mole is abbreviated mol and is the number of atoms in exactly 12 grams of carbon-12. Avogadro’s constant is 6.022 E23 and is the number of particles in 1 mole of any substance A mole of marbles would cover the continental U.S. to a depth of 70 miles. A mole of periods (.) placed next to each other would equal the radius of our galaxy.

Molar Mass The mass in grams of one mole of any substance. The molar mass of any substance is its average atomic mass in grams. The molar mass of Nitrogen is 14.0067 g/mol. There are 6.022 E23 atoms in 14.0067 g of Nitrogen

Conversion Factors A conversion factor is a fraction or ratio of the molar mass of a substance over 1 mol (14.0067g N ) or 1 mol over the molar 1mol mass of a substance ( 1 mol ) 14.0067 g N .

Using Conversion Factors To convert from moles to mass multiply the given number of moles by the conversion factor molar mass/1mol. To convert from mass to moles multiply the given amount of mass by the conversion factor 1mol/molar mass.
