What have been the social and economic impacts of the enlargement of the European Union (EU)?

Enlargement of the European Union The EU is an example of a trade bloc. Every country within the bloc has agreed to trade freely with the other members and also allow free movement of people between their countries. In 2004, the EU was enlarged to include countries from central Europe such as Poland. Unemployment in some of the member states, e.g. Poland, was high.

Some people warned that a flood of migrants would move the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy to find work. If they did, would it be a good or bad thing for the UK and other wealthier members of the EU? Discuss with the person next whether migrants moving to places like the UK is good or bad thing?

Task One 1) Using the table copy and complete the following: The most common reason given by all migrants aged was …….. whereas the most common reason given by migrants aged 55+ was …….. 2)Suggest how the push and pull factors that cause migration to Spain would be different in each of the following examples –A wealthy business man who has just retired in the UK –A young, single man from Romania who has few qualifications 15 minutes

How has newly industrialised countries (NICs) such as India and China benefited from globalisation?
