Presentation transcript:

In our world today a billion people are going hungry yet 10 billion pounds worth of food is thrown away in this country every year.

The truth is… there is enough food for everyone.

The Salvation Army is a charity and a part of the Christian Church. The Salvation Army is nothing like a military army – it doesnt have weapons and it doesnt fight against people.

The Salvation Army fights against the things that make life bad for people, things like poverty and hunger.

When they started The Salvation Army over 130 years ago, William and Catherine Booth didnt feel it was fair that many people couldnt afford to buy enough food to feed their families properly.

William and Catherine decided they had to help these people. One of the many things they did was to provide cheap breakfasts called farthing breakfasts for children whose families couldnt afford to give their them breakfast before school.

William and Catherine knew that if the children didnt eat properly they wouldnt be able to grow strong and healthy and would find it more difficult to fight diseases. They also knew that without food the children would have less energy and that they wouldnt be able to concentrate on their school work.

Today The Salvation Army works in over 120 countries. It still believes that it is important to help the poor. Sadly there are still many children in the world whose families dont have enough to food to feed them properly.

The majority of these people live in developing communities and work as farmers growing crops, raising animals or fishing. They need to provide food for their families as well as enough extra to sell. However, the soil is often not good and the harvest is often not big enough to do this.

There are many children alive today who, because of poverty, arent able to eat a balanced diet and dont get the nutrients they need.

The Salvation Army is helping these people in a number of ways...

By providing animals and training people to care for them.

By helping local farmers to improve their skills.

The Salvation Army is also providing tools, training and other resources. It is helping people to improve their land and to grow better crops.

It is helping these farmers and their families look forward to a better future.
