Cells: Plants VS Animals Brady Boyd

Content Area: Science Grade Level: 5th Grade Summary: The purpose of this power point is for the student to become familiar with different parts and functions of plant and animal cells. Learning Objective: Given a picture or function, the student will be able to identify organelles inside plant and animal cells with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: SPI 0507.1.1 Identify the major parts of plant and animal cells such as, the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, and cytoplasm. Accomplishment: GLE 0507.1.1 Distinguish between the basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells.

First we need to familiarize ourselves with the parts of an animal cell Click on the names of the organelles in the cell to see the function. Plasma Membrane Mitochondria Endoplasmic Reticulum Nucleus Ribosomes Lysosomes & Peroxisomes Golgi Apparatus Click when finished Cytoplasm

Now let’s look at a plant cell! Click on the names of the organelles in the cell to see the function Mitochondria Golgi Apparatus Cell Wall Plasma Membrane Vacuole Peroxisomes Ribosomes Cytoplasm Nucleus Chloroplast Click when finished Endoplasmic Reticulum

Plasma Membrane The plasma membrane of a cell is like a security guard of a building. It only lets certain people or things go in or out of the cell. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Endoplasmic Reticulum The Endoplasmic Reticulum is like a little factory inside the cell. It, along with the help of a team, make proteins for the cell. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Golgi Apparatus The golgi apparatus works with the endoplasmic reticulum to make the proteins it just created bigger and better; similar to an assembly line. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Ribosomes Ribosomes are like protein production teams that work in the endoplasmic reticulum factory and transport the proteins around the cell. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Nucleus The nucleus is the control center that tells the rest of the cell what to do. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Lysosomes & Peroxisomes The lysosomes and peroxisomes are the recycle and waste centers of the cell. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is the jelly in the cell that holds everything together. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Mitochondria The mitochondria is what makes food for the cell. They act as the digestive system that breaks things down to make energy. Back to the Animal Cell Back to the Plant Cell

Vacuole Vacuoles are storage units for the cell. Back to the Plant Cell

Cell Wall Cell walls are only found in plant cells and help structure the cell and hold it all together. Back to the Plant Cell

Chloroplast Chloroplast are only found in plant cells. They are what make the plant green. They work to create sugars and create the byproduct that we need to breathe. Back to the Plant Cell

What part of the cell makes food for the cell? A. Endoplasmic Reticulum B. Mitochondria C. Nucleus D. Cytoplasm

Which of these organelles is the golgi apparatus?
