ES Ch. 1.1 Intro to Earth’s Structure BIG QUESTIONS What are the main parts of the Earths System? How do Constructive and Destructive Forces change Earth?

What is a system? Definition: a group of parts that work together as a whole Examples of Systems:

Energy Definition: the ability to do work Two Main sources of Energy that drives the Earth’s System

Parts of the Earth’s Systems Four Main Parts: Atmosphere Geosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere

Atmosphere Thin layer of gas that surrounds the earth Consists mostly of Nitrogen and Oxygen Contain dust, water vapor and all precipitation

Geosphere Earth’s mass Consists of solid rocks, metals and other materials Three main parts: Metal core Solid middle layer Rocky outer layer

Hydrosphere Contains all Earth’s water Lakes, Rivers, Oceans, Glaciers, water vapor and Ground Water

Biosphere Life can not exist without WATER! Parts that contain living organisms

Forces that Change Earth Constructive Shape the land’s surface by building up mountains and other landmasses Destructive Destroy and wear away landmasses through processes like erosion and weathering.
