Welcome to Discovery Education Science for Elementary

Digital Media that Works Enhance science instruction with a formative assessment tool that enables you to monitor student progress and recommend resources based on individual student needs. Empower students to think and explore like scientists. Engage student minds with science while reinforcing important literacy and mathematics skills.

New users must click the tab “New User Login” to get started. Log In Screen New users must click the tab “New User Login” to get started.

New Users – the school Passcode New users in each school building will need to know the unique 8-character Passcode that has been assigned to their school. When new users enter the Passcode and click the “Submit” button, they will be taken to an account set-up screen. 1a2b 3c4b One main point to emphasize on this slide is the fact that the same Passcode is used by all users in a specified school building. Once users have created accounts, they will not need to use the Passcode again. Each time they return to the site, they use the username and password they stipulated when they created their accounts.

Setting Up Accounts This is the form you will see when you have entered your school Passcode. The key field in this form is the “Username” field, since your log-in name must be unique to the entire Discovery Education Science for Elementary subscriber base. Before you click the “Continue” button, be sure that you are familiar with the Terms of Use and click the box that signifies that you agree to Discovery Education’s subscription terms. Username must be a minimum of six characters. Both the username and password may contain these characters only: letters, numbers, hyphen, and period.

Logging into DE Science for Elementary Teachers use the “Educator Login” tab to log in with their username and password.

Logging into DE Science for Elementary Locate Discovery Education Science Elementary School and click the link “Go now!” If your school subscribes to both Discovery Education Science Elementary and Middle School, the first time users log in, a pop-up window will appear, giving users the option of selecting Discovery Education Science for Elementary as the default site

Enhance Your Instruction with Multimedia Content Curriculum Standards Search Keyword Search Advanced Search Browse three areas of science You can locate media using the keyword search, the Advanced search, the curriculum standards search or by browsing DESC’s science topics Upon login, you will find three areas of science: Physical Science, Life Science and Earth and Space Science. These areas of science are common to elementary science curricula across the country.

Pathways to Science Investigation EXPLORE Explorations enable students to manipulate variables and test their predictions about outcomes. Virtual Labs are designed to give students the opportunity to practice designing and conducting virtual investigations. EXPLORE The Explore section provides exciting, interactive media including Explorations and Virtual Labs that allow students to practice and experience science in a simulated online environment. Explorations Use Explorations to activate prior knowledge or as a presentation tool to examine a specific concept. Students can make predictions about outcomes and then use the Exploration to test those predictions by manipulating inputs or selections. For example, in the Exploration “Flower to Flower,” students make selections from a variety of roots, stems and leaves, to create a plant that will survive in a specific environment.  Virtual Labs To understand the science process, students need practice with science investigation. Virtual Labs are designed to give students the opportunity to practice designing and conducting virtual investigations in preparation for designing and conducting their own hands-on investigations. Virtual Labs come in three parts: Introduction This part sets the stage for the investigation by presenting a real-world problem around which the investigation is based. Investigate This tab allows students to select the lab level, sign in and begin conducting the investigation, one trial at a time. The first level offers a simple choice of choosing one variable to control. The second level complicates the investigation with multiple options or multiple test subjects to observe. Results This tab provides students with a record of the results of each trial in chart form. Students also are provided with a paper copy on which to record the data.
