ED EL 335 Class Notes Day 5The Draft Rationale explained and assigned

Organizing the Unit Plan Assignment 1: The Rationale Big Idea Essential Question Enduring Understandings The Cluster

The Big Idea The PoS outlines the major intent or big idea of the grade at the very top of the first page of each grade Or key word: big ideawww.learnalberta.ca The unit plan needs to reflect and connect with this big idea in some way

The Cluster Select what you think fits together Choose from the entire list of outcomes

An example of a Cluster for Grade 5

Values and Attitudes (1-2) Knowledge and Understanding (4-5) Appreciate how the land sustains communities and the diverse ways that people have of living on the land (GC, LPP) How do landforms, bodies of water and natural resources affect the quality of life in Canada? (LPP) Appreciate the influence of the natural environment on the growth and development of Canada (LPP) Acknowledge oral traditions, narratives and stories as valid sources of knowledge about the land and diverse Aboriginal cultures and history (CC, I, TCC) In what ways do natural resources and the physical geography of a region determine the establishment of communities? (ER, LPP) Appreciate how changes impact citizenship and identity; recognize how economic and political changes impact ways of life of citizens (C, ER, I, PADM)

What narrative will the cluster tell? The creativity of the teacher identifies links between selected outcomes in the cluster

So, what narrative can these tell? Appreciate how the land sustains communities and the diverse ways that people have of living on the land (GC, LPP) How do landforms, bodies of water and natural resources affect the quality of life in Canada? (LPP) Appreciate the influence of the natural environment on the growth and development of Canada (LPP) Acknowledge oral traditions, narratives and stories as valid sources of knowledge about the land and diverse Aboriginal cultures and history (CC, I, TCC) In what ways do natural resources and the physical geography of a region determine the establishment of communities? (ER, LPP) Appreciate how changes impact citizenship and identity; recognize how economic and political changes impact ways of life of citizens (C, ER, I, PADM)

The Enduring Understandings (The narrative the unit does tell) Within Alberta, the geography influences the way of life of its people. Canada is the same. The geography influences the life of people in Canada. (5.1.1, 5.1.2, 5.1.3, 5.3.1) I am able to appreciate that people have different perspectives on actions and events because of their different experiences in life (5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.3.1, 5.S.1) There are many ways of knowing and each has its place in understanding (5.2.1, 5.S.1) Because everyone has different experiences and perspectives on issues, it is important to develop and use strategies and skills for collaborative decision making and problem solving (5.S.1, 5.S.4, 5.1.1, 5.1.3) Canada is always changing; the environment and society are interconnected. We are capable of influencing the world in which we live (5.1.1, 5.1.3)

The Essential Question What will this narrative be about? Develop a question that will cause students to develop an understanding and an appreciation of the topic of the questionnot just an answer

The Essential Question How does the geography of each region of Canada impact the life and identity of its people to make that region unique?

The Cluster: How does the geography of each region of Canada impact the life and identity of its people to make that region unique? Appreciate how the land sustains communities and the diverse ways that people have of living on the land (GC, LPP) How do landforms, bodies of water and natural resources affect the quality of life in Canada? (LPP) Appreciate the influence of the natural environment on the growth and development of Canada (LPP) Acknowledge oral traditions, narratives and stories as valid sources of knowledge about the land and diverse Aboriginal cultures and history (CC, I, TCC) In what ways do natural resources and the physical geography of a region determine the establishment of communities? We are capable of influencing the world in which we live (5.1.1, 5.1.3)

Writing the narrative So, how will students develop these understandings? What activities and lessons will be used?
