Group Research Project

Publication Types When doing research, it is important to distinguish between the three general types of publications. Click the link below to read and understand these differences. Scholarly, Trade and Popular

Brainstorm on Ideas The instructor will give you a thematic category from which your group will brainstorm on a more specific topic to research. Watch the following video to learn how to choose a topic. Picking your topic IS research

Primary Source Once your group has decided on a topic, you will search for related articles. For this first search, you will look in popular magazines only. Each member will find one or more magazine articles related to the group’s topic. Each member will then read and orally summarize them to the group. Once all summaries have been shared, the group will choose ONE of the articles to be the primary source for the group’s research project.

Popular Magazines Popular Magazines List Time Wired The Economist Business Week Newsweek The Atlantic Monthly Science News The American Scholar MIT Technology Review National Geographic Popular Science Scientific American Discover Magazine Psychology Today

Scholarly Articles After the group’s primary source has been chosen and approved by the instructor, each group member will continue researching for articles on the topic. The group needs to collect the links or MLA citations of these articles on Google Drive and give the instructor access. Each group member must find two additional articles, one of them scholarly, to add to the research.

Scholarly Article Process View the videos to the right that were created by North Carolina State University to understand the process of how a scholarly article goes from an idea to publication and the significance of a peer-reviewed article. Also included are videos on the best ways to read and use a scholarly article. From Idea to Library Peer Review in Five Minutes Parts of a Scholarly Journal How to Read a Scholarly Journal

Searching OSU Databases Use the link to the right to a video made by an OSU instructor for English She explains how to search for scholarly articles in the OSU library online system. Follow the video directions carefully to help you locate scholarly and trade articles on your group’s topic. Researching Databases in the OSU Library Website

Additional Database Searches Use the directions given in the video to the left to access Google Scholar, a free, public search engine to locate scholarly literature on or off OSU campus. Google Scholar

Article Critiques Each group member must write an article critique for each of the two articles he or she finds and uses in the group’s research project. To review how to do an article critique, please see the Gateway 108 website, click on the menu item ‘Writing and Reading’ and then ‘Article Critique Materials’. Gateway 108

Presentation Once all of the article critiques have been written, the group must create a Google Presentation (similar to PowerPoint). The group presentation should be organized in a logical manner with an introduction background information on the topic a summary of the research conclusions and deductions made from the research Each group must rehearse with the instructor prior to presenting to an audience.

Google Presentation The Google Presentation must include the title of the presentation, semester/year, and the names of group members on the first slide a minimum of 15 slides student’s name in bottom corner for each slide he or she designs an image, picture, graph or chart on each slide no distorted or blurry images no distracting animations each group member presenting the same number of slides each group member presenting for about the same amount of time a list of all resources in MLA style on the last slide Click on the icon to view a PowerPoint on general guidelines
