Bienvenue au New Hampshire A Restaurant Experience A campaign for a French-Friendly New Hampshire

At the Restaurant The hostess hears a customer speaking French and decides to take a chance and welcome her in French. She’s a little nervous. Bonjour. (Hello) Bonjour. (response from guest)

The waitress decides to give her French language skills a try, too. Bonjour. Je m’appelle Michelle (Hello from waitress) Bonjour. (Response from guest) (What a nice surprise to be greeted in French.)

Comment ça va? (How are you? Waitress asks) Ça va bien. (Very well, replies the guest) Et vous? (and you?)

Très bien. (Very well) Merci. (Thank you)

Je parle un peu de français, et c’est tout mon français! (I speak a little French and that is all my French!) Your French is quite good. (in English) Merci. (Thank you)

Non, regardez l’étiquette. (No, see the label) ‘’Le pourboire n’est pas compris dans la note. On ajoute 15 a 20% d’habitude.’’ (The tip is not included in the bill. You add 15-20% typically) Ah, d’accord. Merci. (I understand. Thank you.) Two guests discuss tipping. Est-ce que le pourboire est compris? (Is the tip included?)

Je serai de retour avec votre carte. (I’ll be right back with your card.) (In Canada, credit cards are swiped right at the table so taking the card away strikes them as odd.)

Au revoir. (Good bye) (Wow! That went really well. I was nervous but right away I could see in her face that she understood me and appreciated my effort. And I thought the tipping issue would be awkward but it worked out all right.)
