Workshop Servers (Server Software) Browsers Media Delivery Technologies: o Flash o QuickTime o Windows Media o Real. New Internet technology: XML XHTML

Flash Definition Multimedia technology developed by Macromedia to allow much interactivity to fit in a relatively small file size. Information Flash can be used to create entire "Flash sites" or to add interactive elements to standard HTML sites. Some Flash-only sites are accompanied by non-Flash sites in an effort to cater to a wider audience. Flash technology can also be used in interactive banner & button advertisements.

QuickTime This is a multimedia technology developed by Apple Computers. It is a popular format for creating and storing sound, graphics, and movie (.MOV) files. Though it is an Apple technology, QuickTime software is available for both the Mac and the PC. QuickTime can also handle 3D models, sound, text, animation, music, panoramic images, and interactivity.

Windows Media Windows Media is a multimedia framework for media creation and distribution on the Microsoft Windows platform. It consists of a software development kit with several application programming interfaces and a number of prebuilt technologies. Windows Media can handle: Advanced Systems Format (ASF) Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) and Windows Media Playlist (WPL) Windows Media Audio (WMA) Windows Media Video (WMV) and VC-1 HD Photo (JPEG XR) (formerly HDP) (formerly Windows Media Photo (WDP) DVR-MS, the recording format used by Windows Media Center SAMI, the closed caption format developed by Microsoft.

Real Networks RealNetworks developed the RealPlayer. It uses a variety of audio codecs, ranging from low-bitrate formats that can be used over dialup modems, to high-fidelity formats for music. It can also be used as a streaming audio format, that is played at the same time as it is downloaded.

XHTML XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) is a type of XML markup language that replaces or extend versions of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). HTML (prior to HTML5) was defined as an application of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and was a very flexible markup language framework, meaning the structure was very loose. XHTML is an application of XML, a more restrictive subset of SGML. Because XHTML documents need to be well- formed, they can be parsed using standard XML parsers unlike HTML.

XML XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a set of rules for encoding documents electronically. XMLs design goals emphasize simplicity, generality, and usability over the Internet. It is a textual data format, with strong support via Unicode for the languages of the world. Although XMLs design focuses on documents, it is widely used for the representation of arbitrary data structures, for example in web services.
