About Engineering Village www.engineeringvillage.com Engineering Village is a discovery platform where researchers can search multiple databases containing a range of reliable sources: Premium bibliographic databases Reference databases Patent databases Engineering news and more Welcome to Engineering Village 2, the premier web-based discovery platform for the engineering community. Engineering Village 2 offers premium bibliographic databases and features Ei’s Compendex, Inspec from the IEE, and the U.S. government’s National Technical Information Service’s (NTIS) Database Engineering Village 2 also offers users the ability to search engineering reference sources comprised of electronic books, including: CRC handbooks, Referex Engineering Engineering Village 2 also enables users to access other engineering sources, including News provided by Lexis-Nexis, Patent sites, and the All Science Web search, Scirus. All of these sources are tied together with an easy-to-use interface that supports both novice (end-user) searchers and experienced information professionals.

EV comprises diversified databases Compendex Compendex covers over 175 engineering disciplines. Inspect Inspec provides deep coverage in the fields of physics, electrical engineering, electronics and computer science. GeoBase A multidisciplinary database that deeply indexes research literature across the earth sciences including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography and geomechanics. NTIS The leading source of unclassified reports from US and international government agencies. Ei Patents Comprehensive databases of patent content from the US Patent and Trademark Office and European Patent Office combined with Engineering Village’s research tools. Referex Referex Engineering draws on hundreds of premium engineering books, to create a pool of answers to your reference questions. EnCompass LIT&PAT EnCompassLIT & PAT are specialized databases offering coverage of worldwide scholarly literature and patents for the downstream petroleum and petrochemical industries. Chimica Chimica provides access to more than 30 years of coverage from over 600 of international journals in chemistry and chemical engineering. EV: About Compendex

“ Search” Issues Search the text literally Task: Greenhouse effect What would you possibly get ? Greenhouse painting Butterfly effect Green tea ! House wife ! “Greenhouse effect” Search the overtone of the Text Task: Greenhouse effect Can you search it ? What if the text mentions nothing about Greenhouse effect literally in the context?

Getting started: Personal Account Use Personal Account to: Set up e-mail and RSS alerts Tag records Create groups Save records and searches Set up a personal account to save records or searches, or set up e-mail alerts. Personal accounts are included with the annual subscription. Register to create your personal account

Quick Search Select the database(s) you’d like to search Enter keyword and select search field Select limit and search options Stuck? View search tips or context specific help

Expert Search Browse indexes to locate precise terms Use large term entry space for command-line query building For users who are comfortable with “deep” searching techniques, Expert Search gives you full command-line flexibility and functionality. Fully supports all truncation, Boolean search logic, nesting, etc. Command-line syntax is fully documented in Help. Click on the question mark (?) next to search box. Features: Larger dialog box for entering query Full list of search codes for all data fields Additional choices in Browse Indexes – treatment type, document type, language (all 30+ languages) Define fields using search codes

Managing search results Results Manager: Select records Choose display format Save, email, print, or download results View results count and sort results After hitting SEARCH, a list of citations appears. The number of hits found appears at the top of the list – here, 143. Select checkboxes for records to manage, or select ranges. Management options appear at top of page: Choose format: Citation: author, title, source & publication details Abstract: Citation, abstract & controlled terms Detailed record: full bibliographic record, with indexing, etc. Choose output options: View selections: Read records onscreen E-mail: E-mail selected references to yourself or colleagues Print: Format for paper printing Download: Save as RIS (for Reference Manager, Procite or EndNote), RefWorks or ASCII text file Save to Folder: Save references in folder for later viewing Upper right: 25 results per page appear; use pull-down menu to see next 25. If you wish, you can specify a range of references to view or download Up to 400 records can be selected. In the citations, author names appear hyperlinked; click on a name to retrieve more papers by that author. Yellow “Full Text” buttons link to full documents online (availability subject to your institution’s subscriptions). To see individual Compendex records online, click Abstract/Links for a medium record (citation, abstract, controlled terms) or Detailed Record/Links for a fuller bibliographic record (incl. treatment type, additional bibliographic details, etc.) Link to full-text on publisher site (when available)

Too many results? Limit by field, document type, treatment type, publication years, language, etc. Check thesaurus – try narrower terms Turn autostemming off Truncate with care cat* → cat, catalyst, catapults, caterpillar, etc. Use correct Boolean connector Quickly and easily refine search using facets Suggestions for “tweaking” searches – to get answer set from thousands of references to a manageable number.

Faceted Search Results Select terms to include or exclude from search to intelligently refine results Facets include: Database (when searching multiple) Author Name Author Affiliation Controlled Vocabulary Year Language Classification Codes And more View record counts within facets and export to a chart to analyze trends in results

Including & Excluding Terms From Facets Including Terms “+” sign appears between initial keyword and terms included from facets Excluding Terms “-” sign appears between initial keyword and terms included from facets When including an author and document type the system will search for the original term AND the author AND the document type selected. In the example above we first searched for “acid”, then we included an author and a document type which resulted in a query that uses a ‘+’ sign between the initial key word and the added terms from the facets. When you exclude terms from the facets these are shown in the search path as ‘-‘ sign. Select the button at the top of the results list to remove search terms

Other features In addition to the features reviewed today, Engineering Village offers: Expert searching with Boolean Operators Saved record folders Linking to OpenURL resolvers Linking to document delivery services Ask an expert RSS feeds Blog This!

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) What is RSS? An XML format for distributing content on the internet Also known as syndication Why is RSS Important? Content is delivered to the reader as it is updated Better focus on the content by avoiding distractions such as pop-up advertisements and email spam Set up alerts so you’re notified any time a new record that fits your search criteria is added to the database

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Click the RSS icon if you’d like to be updated when new records are added that fit the search criteria. Copy the link provided and paste it in your RSS Aggregator to receive alerts. The next enhancement is the RSS or Real Simple Syndication feature. Here is how it works: Click on the RSS button, copy the links and paste it into your news aggregator. That’s it! This simple step allows you to get customized , automatic, updates through your news aggregator and provides a a ‘one-stop’ place to check all the web content that is of interest to you.

RSS delivered to your reader A slew of software and web based RSS readers are for free on the internet. In this example you can see how records are delivered to “Newsgator.” I can view new search results as I check on all of my news sources, business news, weblogs and whatever else I choose to feed into my RSS reader. The point is that we are providing yet another option for delivering results to researchers in the ways they prefer to receive them.

Blog This Link from a blog to a record of interest on Engineering Village Create current awareness by highlighting new publications in a popular subject area Create a forum from which to collaborate with colleagues in your area of research Share information with an audience outside your organization
