Environmental Education Education for a warmer tomorrow

What do these animals have in common?

Answer … All of the animals on the previous slide are affected by climate change. All of the animals on the previous slide are affected by climate change. Increased temperatures impact more than just the polar bears. Increased temperatures impact more than just the polar bears.

Frogs Frogs  Global warming has increased evaporation rates in many mountainous regions causing denser clouds thus cooling areas and allowing for disease to spread. According to scientists at National Geographic almost a third of the 5,743 known amphibian species are in decline.

Chipmunks  Chipmunks and other hibernating animals face risks when temperatures rise. Scientists have found that some animals wake up from hibernation earlier while others, such as chipmunks, are not hibernating at all.

Birds  The rise in global temperatures can cause seasons to come earlier thus causing birds to breed earlier. As a result food is not readily available causing fewer birds to breed and survive.

Corals  Increased temperatures cause bleaching of corals in which they expel their photosynthetic pigments without which they will starve. This increase can be as slight as 1.5–2°C for as few as six weeks before corals are affected.

Know the facts, teach the facts… Teach Environmental Education

Why teach about the environment?  We are beyond the point where a few scientists can fix all of our problems, we need every man, woman and child to do their part.  With global warming, pollution, deforestation and other environmental issues we are losing biodiversity faster now then any other point in history; people need to know what it is we are losing.

Benefits of Environmental Education  It helps children in their core subjects. This is especially true in terms of increased engagement for science.

Benefits of Environmental Education  For children environmental education provides the critical thinking skills they will need to face these environmental problems we are passing on to them.

Benefits of Environmental Education  Environmental Educations helps to promote healthy children as it gets the students up and moving in the outdoors, not just watching it on television or by clicking a mouse.
