Why Is Math Important for Our Students? Students who take algebra and geometry go on to college at much higher rates than those who do not (83% vs. 36%). Most four-year colleges require three to four years each of high school math and science for admission. Almost 90% of all new jobs require math skills beyond the high school level. From Improving Mathematics Achievement: What Parents and Families Can Do (U.S. Department of Education)

Challenge Given: group one contains the letters: M, T, U, V, W, Y group two contains the letters: C, D, E, K group three contains the letters: S, Z group four contains the letters: H, O, X group five contains the letters: F, G, J, L, P, Q, R Each letter of BRAIN belongs in what group?

What Families Can Do Be positive! Link mathematics with daily life Make mathematics fun Learn about mathematics related careers Have high expectations Support homework

Parental Concerns Keeping students interested is more challenging Struggling to remain involved and aware Harder time getting to know multiple teachers May not be as comfortable with the mathematics your child is learning Your child may not want you to be as involved as previously

Your support is just as important as in the elementary school years! Help your child develop good study habits and time- management skills. Help your child choose a regular time for studying. Talk openly with your child about the importance of school and any problems or conflicts he may be having. Continue to set limits in such areas as the amount of time spent watching television, time spent at a part-time job, and curfew on a school night. Encourage your child not to be afraid to ask for help from the teacher or another student.

Challenge

Family involvement is an essential element for a student’s success in mathematics. You are one of your child’s most valuable resources.
