IST Programme IST Information Day Information Society Technologies Nicosia, Cyprus. 22 January, 2000 A. C. Kakas National Contact Point (Department of Computer Science, University of Cyprus)

IST Programme Information Society SOCIETY that takes full advantage of the ability of effective and direct exchange of information – Communication – without time or geographic constraints to a degree comparable to that of direct physical presence. FOR the improvement of the QUALITY of Life. Raw material : Information/Knowledge NEW REVOLUTION

IST Programme Information Society The European Union writes: “ One of Europe’s most important contributions to the way people around the world are thinking about the revolution in information and communications technologies is the name now attached to it - the “information society”. The general preference in the United States until recently was for the term “information highways”, implying a more limited, technology-based appreciation of what is happening. By contrast, “information society” reflects European concerns with the broader social and organizational changes which will flow from the information and communications revolution”.
